Noisy transmission ????
Well just got my car registered and have been driving all over the place. The car runs very nice no issues. But one concern is the sound of the transmission. Sounds a little dry when its under a load and quiet when I let off the gas. I'm not sure what these are suppose to sound like so hard to know. I did grease the universal joint and will check the level of fluid. Is it easiest to take up the floor to access the transmission fluid level? Any other noise ideas?

Re: Noisy transmission ????
You don't need to take up the floor, just check it from underneath. Just use your pinky in the fill hole to check the level. If you can't reach any fluid, fill it till it starts to run out.

Re: Noisy transmission ????
The straight cut gears of the Model A will make more noise than the later helical gears. Ride in some other cars to compare.

First, second, and reverse will make some noise. In third it should be fairly quiet.

Re: Noisy transmission ????
This may sound strange but take a look at your tailpipe hanger. Mine would be fine until it got warm and then the car got a rumble that would make you think something was very wrong. The tailpipe hanger would expand and grab the pipe and in turn would send a vibration into the frame. I made a new bracket that allows the tailpipe to move and ride on a heat resistant surface non metallic surface and my car quieted right down.

Did you check the oil in the rear axle?

Yes - rear axle was right up to the top

Re: Noisy transmission ????
When mine was noisy it was only in high gear and it not in lower gears.

I would say the noise is coming from the rear axle. Third gear is direct so there should be no gear noise. |

Re: Noisy transmission ????
How can the rear end be determined to be the culprit?

Does it make more noise on the pull or the coast?

Re: Noisy transmission ????
It make noise on the pull and nothing on the coast - if it was the rear end why would I not hear it in second gear when I get up to a good speed?

Engine noise could mask it some. My guess is the noise is in the rear axle. You would do well to have someone who knows A's to drive it if possible and give their opinion. |

Re: Noisy transmission ????
Can this be pin pointed by jacking it up and running it on stands to listen, not sure you will get the same load factor. I don't know any other Model A enthusiast in the area.

Re: Noisy transmission ????
You're right, the load is a factor in gear noise. There is bound to be somone in the Boston area that could help.

Re: Noisy transmission ????
Well if it was the rear end is it likely bearings of some sort? Maybe that is the best place to start and how hard is it to replace all the bearings?

Re: Noisy transmission ????
I also think the rear end is the likely cause. My first guess would be bad pinion bearings, allowing the pinion to move forward and rearward a little, which would account for the change in noise while pulling or coasting.
