My 29 Sport Coupe has it's original back cushion and it fits close on the bottom but I can still get my fingers in there to start the threads. I'm not sure if they used hex head screw fasteners originally but that's what I use with washers wide enough to still cover the slots. I've seen folks climb in there so they can see everything while installing the fasteners but I'm used to fitting stuff blind.

I've never looked at the Snyder's reproduction springs to see how well they fit and it's common to find home brewed spring assemblies for both back and bottom cushions. I guess folks would be harder on the bottoms when either people or heavy objects are put back there. Stepping on those springs will damage them over time.
