Ford primer
Did Ford use primer under the color coat of paint? Does anybody know what color it was close to? Not that it matters much but when I sand through I was wondering if or what to expect.

Re: Ford primer
A dark red oxide.... can be matched with PPG Kondar Red, if still available.

If this is what you have, it's pretty hard tp remove. Leave as much on as you can.

Re: Ford primer
I believe it was called "Bonderite" and it was a reddish-brown.

Re: Ford primer
My Briggs Fordor with original paint got whacked in the upper rear corner in the 1940's, and took a small chunk of paint. The primer along the edges of the gouge is indeed a reddish brown, and slightly translucent, like old epoxy. It is also noticably thick and a little brittle where it has been exposed to sunlight.
Oddly enough, the bare metal spot shows no signs of rusting. Just barely a little surface spotting that easily wipes off with WD-40 on a rag. Perhaps some residue of the primer keeps it from being attacked? |
