Default My lucky day!

I just bought a used Model A engine. This was one of those "it ran great when I took it out but I don't know anything about it" deals. Typical hot rodder selling parts he didn't want. Pig-in-a-poke.

So, I get it home and it starts to look like a lot of miles since the last rebuild (old peeled paint, cracked pulley) and maybe left in the rain for a while. I feel bit taken until I pull the pan. Clean inside, balanced crank, and pressure oil to the middle main! Whoo!

So, is it typical to only pressurize the middle main?
The flywheel appears unlightened. Is this typical, OK, other?
I assume, with pressure coming straight from the pump to the main, that an oil pressure gauge is still useless. Correct?
Any special gotchas to check for with the oiling system?

Thanks,
Simon

Congrats Simon on your purchase!

Yes, we often pressurize only the center main bearing however, most of the time we do not do it as pictured. Instead we drill & thread the block for the fitting as the oil pump housing is very thin and fragile in that area where the fitting is, --and can easily fracture there rendering the oil pump non functional. I would remove the pump and replace it with one that has not been modified. Then if you are still wanting pressure to the center main, consider threading the block like in the pictures below.

Thanks for the oiling advice.

I did find the flaw in this engine. A wrist pin circlip "ear" broke off and gouged the bore heavily. Too deep to bore. It needs a liner.

Just for future reference, may we ask what the "hot rodder" charged for the unwanted model A engine?

Even with a score in the bore, NICE PICKUP!
