Emergency brake question
Just finishing up a complete brake job. Had drums turned, new linings on shoes and emergency brake band. Also installing "floaters". Front brakes went on beautiful. Just put first rear brake drum on and it went on hard and turns real hard. I have the adjuster all the way out and when I put the drum on it was going fine till it was on far enough to hit the emergency brake band. Did go on but drums turns very hard. Took drum off and removed the emergency brake band. Put the drum back on and it spins fine with no resistance. So it seems like the emergency brake band is the problem but and I don't know of any adjustment. Any ideas on how to proceed?? Thanks, Jim 29 Std Roadster.

Re: Emergency brake question
the e brake bands are too thick
you can try chamfering the lining on the ends or sanding down the entire e brake shoe.. i took a few thousands off the drum on that area on the last one.. put it together with the adjusting rod off to make sure its not pulling |

Re: Emergency brake question
Had this problem many times.. The diameter of the e-brake area in the new drums is too small. While truing them up in the lathe, we cut the e-brake area diameter to 9 5/8". (that is if my memory serves me correctly.) Measure that dia. on the old drum and cut accordingly. No need to remove any of the e-brake lining.

Re: Emergency brake question
Besides the thickness of the emergency bands, check to make sure that the bands are on the right way as there is an inner and outer edge. If they are on wrong then they will not work correctly and will be crooked. They would make the drum installation very hard to do and not allow the drum to seat properly.

Re: Emergency brake question
As Mel mentioned, the band fits correctly only one way. Notice the step in the brackets where the toggle links are pinned. The high side faces the outside of the car, so the low side rides against the parking brake carrier.
