Well there is no mystery with this type drive far from the word 'modern' they were common way back in the 1940s while Ford stuck with the common drive used since the Model T. Not sure when Ford went to that style but Id say starting with the Y Block. All Ford products went to this style on all engines, Ford called these a 'Flow thru' drive. I'm not sure when Ford went to the type with a solonoid on top that shoved the drive in, 1960s? up to today. Word of caution and boy I learned; don't fiddle with this drive out of the box if you spin it in your hand the internals will be undone that means you have to take it apart to reset it, a bear, little dogs little springs that will fly into space. My tip for all take it apart in a big cardboard box to reset it. sam |

Re: barrel starter drive for flathead
One of the best parts of this whole thread was seeing Walt DuPont's name in print!

One of the old guys showed me how to reset the barrel type starter drive On the very end, there are three places to put the end of a very sharp pencil, break off the end of the lead. It will turn back by hand. I think I could do it- now- but I would have to be holding it. Karl |

I didn't watch the video I know what they were going to do, but my reply on that was around 1959 or so and you would never find that 'how to' in any library. Our Ford books were still from the 30s 40s so I learned by myself. I did not know other makes used this at that time cause I'm only 15 yrs old. |

Re: barrel starter drive for flathead
The “new modern barrel starter drive”.
Well supposedly. New and modern? Mine was graunchy from the very first start and with less than 50 starts failed to engage at times. I feel inclined to return to the Bendix type. Am I Robinson Crusoe?
