If it has a Stromberg model number on it, it may be easier to trace. So many automobile manufacturers existed in the early years of motorized transportation that it would be hard to nail it down. Add agricultural and industrial applications just muddies the water even more. The real early ones were brass but that one it painted so I can't tell. Folks on the AACA forum may recognize it.

Stromberg-Carlson and Goldberg carburetor history (Stromberg Motor Devices) puts it in Chicago in the early years before being bought out by Bendix Corp in 1929. It went to South Bend, Indiana after that. They did supply a fair amount automotive stuff for a time before gravitating toward aviation applications. The Stromberg 97 is still one of the best known products they ever made.

I found this link that is the best yet for early stuff. It looks like a U on the casting so that may be what it is. A series U-1 carb. Still don't know the application though.

It looks like the carb that was on our Owens Boat that had a six cyl Hercules engine.
