Default Model A tailgate Vs Model T Tailgate

Are the factory Model A Pickup tailgate and the Factory Model T tailgate the same? or Did Ford use the same tailgate on both the Model A and the Model T?

I am not an expert on this however I have always thought them to be the same. The T tailgate assembly was part number T-6184, and in November of '27 the Engineer's Info #4717 changes the part number to A-78405. To further confirm these appear to be the same, the stamped panel for the T pick-up was part number T-6151 however in August of 1926, the part number appears to have been changed to A-78409. I would need to research this further to understand why the change was made that early, but I would be glad to research this further for you if they ever reopen the Benson library.

There were 2 tailgates for the Model A Pickups that I am aware of. The early Model A tailgate resembles the Model T tailgate (1925-1927) and may be exactly the same. The hinge that is riveted to the sheet metal is the giveaway. The early hinge is a single layer at the hinge bolt area, and the top of the hinge is cut flat. The later hinge is doubled back over itself and the top of the hinge has its corners clipped off. See the photos.

So it appears that late model T tailgates ARE the same a early model A tailgates. I wish the prices in the picture were the same as now.

The Prices are the same today... if you are willing to buy a used original one, in good condition..... just post a 'wanted' ad here and one will show up for about $250......

Keep in mind that the tailgate "A" in the old Mac's catalog shows clipped hinges at the top, that would not be correct for Model T or early Model A. If you were not interested in the correctness, I'm sure they would all interchange and fit fine.
