Should be timing marks on the damper. Your damper outer ring may have rotated and the marks not where you expect to find them.

Maybe the marks are on the pulley edge like they are on a small T-Bird ?

I had my damper rebuilt by Damper Dudes. If the heads are not back on yet, make your own marks.

Some dampers dont have timing marks, but only a raised button on the edge. Instead the marks are incorporated into the pointer which actually has 3 or 4 points, with the degrees also marked on the pointer(s) You just need the right pointer. I have two, but will be out of town for at least two weeks from tomorrow. If you cant find one I can send one in a couple weeks.

Here is a picture of the pointer. So much for memory, as there are 5 points.
0, 3, 8, 10 14 degrees. If you want I can have my wife send this tomorrow. Send me a PM in the next couple hours though.

If I recall correctly the damper with the timing marks on them the marks will be in line with one of the "spokes" on the damper. Assuming it hasn't slipped.
