What age group???
Every day when I review your threads and reponses I wonder just what is the average age of the guys/girls that belong and use this forum. Has it ever been determined? Just curious, thats all. And oh, my speedometer will hit 70 this year. Thanks.

Re: What age group???
The way I do the math, I am 49 and 361/365ths.
My Model A experience started when my Dad bought a '31 Pick-Up when I was about 14. I found a funny looking gear in a box of miscellaneous parts and I felt the desire to find out where it went. Turns out it was the speedometer drive gear. Still have the Pick-up, the rear-end is currently in my Phaeton and that speedo drive gear still isn't working. Re: What age group???
I am 65. Started with the model A when I was 13, and my father and I restored a town sedan. My brother has that car now, along with a roadster and a pickup and 3 doodlebugs. My other brother has a doodlebug, as he cant see well enough to get a license. I have had a few dozen model A's, and now just have the tudor I bought in 1975. It brought my sons home from the hospital when they were born. (try that today with all the child protection laws) I threw a party for the car when it turned 80 years old. I have a lot of cars, so it does not get out as much as it used to, but is still on the road regularly. I started restoring cars full time in 1988, and have restored many model A's for customers. More info on my web site.

Re: What age group???
31 here... and I have a 31 coupe! I caught the bug (and the car) from my Grandad. I'm a pilot now but grew up spending time on the family farm and always loved wrenching on anything with a motor and spending time outdoors. I'm certainly having a lot of fun with the hobby and enjoying all the people I'm meeting in my local club. It makes the city life a lot more tolerable when you find a good church and other good groups (I.E. the local A club) to be a part of. Amazing how a feeling of "community" can draw people together and have a good time!

Re: What age group???
I'm 65. These numbers are going to be skewed due to younger people being computer literate and as the age increases the litteracy goes down. So there are going to be many that won't be responding.

Re: What age group???
73.... if I remember right......
First Model A in 1974 after wanting one for 20 years but it was too far gone and I was getting moved around on the job too much so it had to go down the road. Next one was 27 years later, in 2001. Currently have a 31 Deluxe Coupe and 31 Huckster-to-be. Last edited by Cool Hand Lurker; 01-21-2012 at 10:45 AM. Reason: Sp |

83 here. First A was a 28 Roadster when in High School. In the hobby since 1962. Currently have three A's, a Dec. 1927 Light Delivery, a Feb. 1929 Roadster, a March 1930 Deluxe Coupe, and hundreds of wonderful people I have met since 1962.

Re: What age group???
I just turned 76 and have owned or restored over 20 Model A's and still have my 29 Special coupe since 1980 and the 30 roadster since 2005. Just finishing a 29 Town sedan for someone else and starting a 30 pickup restoration also for someone else. Always loved Model A's since I saw my first phaeton when I was 12. These cars keep you young.

Re: What age group???
I am almost 21 and have been collecting and working on cars for about 4 years now. I just purchased my 1930 Ford Model A Murray Bodied Town Sedan. My great grandfather collected Ford Model T's as well as Ford Model A's, but sold off his collection before I was born. According to my grandmother he had every year and model of the T's and A's in his collection. I think that is where I get my love for old cars. It's a fun hobby and am very glad to finale have a Ford Model A in my collection.

Re: What age group???
I turned 65 this past november. I got my first model A in the spring of 1960 at the age of 13. I was exposed and contracted the incurable model A disease at the age of nine, our 14 year old neighbor, at the time had a red stripped down model A. I have owned and and done all the work on several model A's for over fifty years.

Re: What age group???
I'm 77 3/4 and probably the oldest to reply so far, but thankfully my health is still good. The first vehicle I drove was my father's 1930 International one ton truck, in around 1950. I have liked older vehicles ever since. I had a 1947 Plymouth in 1955, in my last year of college. I had a 1948 Plymouth between 1962 and 1966. After I retired as an Aerospace Engineer in 2002, in 2004 I got a 1930 Model A coupe from a friend in New Hampshire who restores them. This was followed by a 1930 Town Sedan in 2005. I replaced the first coupe with another 1930 coupe with a much better body in 2006. Both of my present cars are good drivers, and I drive them as much as I can. My 50 year old son also enjoys driving them, and we will often have both cars in parades. I am fortunate to live about 15 minutes from Berts in Denver, and Steve and Phil have been a big help to me. Fordbarn and Ahooga have also been a big help in learning about Model As.

The first vehicle I ever drove was a 29 RP on my Grandfather's farm at age 10. The same pickup was my first car at age 16. I am now 67 and have a 29 CCP + 63 and 99 Corvettes and a 69 Sprint Car. Lots of retirement projects!

I am building a Model A powered speedster now with an original Riley 2 port on it. I grew up with Model T's my father had several of them. He is still going strong at 94 but I put a starter on his 1912 touring car recently so he wouldn't have to crank it any more. He just said recently that he USED to think 94 was old................. I think this hobby helps keep you young. Dodge |

Re: What age group???
Bought my first and only Model A, a '30 coupe (in bad shape) at the ripe age of 70. The driveline was already done, so I was lucky. I'm now 73 and I've finished it. I seem to spend a lot of time under, over and inside it, constantly working on something. I look forward every day to getting out in my shop just to work on "Miss Tillie". We're going to get some snow up here so I'm looking forward to getting her out in it.

I get to be 53 until April, I've had my '31 C/cab p/u since I was 15.
I just FINALLY got to drive it 'legal like' last Sunday night - all in one piece. Got a lot of bugs to work out, and get it back to the body shop to fix all my 'screw ups' (it's amazing how new paint can turn a guy into a butterfingers) Scott |

Re: What age group???
I am 58 and have had my '30 Tudor for a little over a year. I started out with MGB's, and still have them too. I have always liked the British roadsters. I decided that I would like to have a Model A about 20-25 years ago, but never had the money to spend on one until now. I have enjoyed every minute of it. I like to tinker with it, drive it, and show it off.

Re: What age group???
At a mere 52, I still look forward to a couple more decades with my Model A's.
Dad has a '28 pickup that I used to drive as a kid, and which he used as a spare car. A real rust bucket which he is now disassembling, and which I will no doubt someday inherit in just that condition. Twenty-three or so years ago he bought me a '28 Special Coupe which I have driven and worked on ever since. Just this summer my brother sold me the '31 pickup Dad had bought him at roughly the same time. Now I'm chasing twice the rattles.

53 and have always loved old cars. Got my first ride in a model A when I was 4, bought my first one two years ago and got my second one last April. You could say I'm hooked. I have even dropped all of my hot rod and custom car magazine subscriptions.

Re: What age group???
43 here.. Started in the hobby when I worked summers and weekends in a model A restoration house while I was in college. I was the resident gopher, yard-ape, parts-monkey and general sandblaster roust-a-bout I got my first 'A' about 4 years ago and have been turning my garage into an "A" rescue shelter since then, taking in all the strays my wife will allow
Loving this hobby, and tour every chance I get. |

Re: What age group???
Almost ready to turn 48 and I've had my A 4 years. I'll have to say I'm surprised at how young many of the respondents have been. I'm considered the kid of our club. I think perhaps the statistics here are skewed by the fact that is in an online survey and computer and internet use drops rapidly in the older age groups.

I'm 71, can you believe I traded my our SSR for our 1928 Phaeton, I've had the best time with the Model A, Joined the Model A Club in Owensboro, Ky. planning a tour to Rough River Lodge for lunch in February, sure hope the weather is right for the Phaeton. We enjoy the car very much....If I can figure how to post a picture of the car, I will.

Re: What age group???
65+, had Model As since 1958, and still have my first one.
I am actively working to get it back on the road soon. I had to disassemble it years ago due to lack of space, and not wanting to let it get destroyed by being out in the weather. Last summer I realized if I did not get it back together soon, it probably would never be in one piece again. Having the time of my life working on that car. Re: What age group???
I am 49. I was probably about 19 when I first took notice of Model A's.
At 26 I purchased my 31 coupe. Looking back I wish I'd had the resources of this site to reference before buying (heck nobody I knew even had a home computer) 2 chapters into the Judging standards & it occured to me...damn...all this car needs is EVERYTHING. Since opening an autoglass shop at 30 yrs old I've put my project on hold many times. I fact it's been a series of short, furious, bursts of action, but then always pushed into the corner after a few days as fresh business comes in the door. I haven't devised a plan yet to finish this car before retirement, but it's on my mind constantly. Perhaps at 50 I shall hang out a closed sign...keep paying rent...JUST work on the "A"...and run till the bank account is dry In the meantime...this site has alot of good people who keep the spark alive & we're a lucky bunch! The car is in front of a body shop where I worked. That was taken right after I bought her! Last edited by Craig Lewis; 01-21-2012 at 03:13 AM. Reason: add pic |

41..... Having been raised in a Model A family I've grown up around the Model A all my life. Some of my best memories as a kid in the 70's revolve around our 1930 Model A Ford Tudor.
Raising three boys of my own today I hope each of them have great memories of their Dad and the 1930 Model A Tudor the way I do. |

Re: What age group???
I'm 41 until August 2013, My 31 150B woodie has been in my family since 1939. I have fond memories of riding in it growing up and learning to drive it at age 11. It developed an engine crack and dad parked it 25 years ago. Dad passed away in 08 so in Feb 2011 I dragged her out of the barn, put an engine in her and have been collecting parts and information ever since. I drove her a few times before I had to seek work out of the country and now can't wait to come home to start on the rest. Feel free to check out my photo albums under my profile.
I really like the FB and everyone here. This is a great venue for learning and sharing. Thank you everyone.

Re: What age group???
OK Guys, I had nothing better to do so I crunched some numbers:
Result is, we Model A'rs on the Barn come in at an average age of 55 years. age brackets are: Under 25 yrs 8% 26 - 35 yrs 8% 36 - 45 yrs 10% 46 - 55 yrs 20% 56 - 60 yrs 9% 61 - 65 yrs 12% 66 - 70 yrs 14% 71 - 75 yrs 10% Over 75 yrs 9% 55% of us are under 60 years and 45% over 60 years and that works out at over 5000 years of experience amongst us.

I am 65. Started working on Model A s with my uncle when I was about 13 or 14. He moved out of state and I let making a living get in the way. But I have been back now 10 years or so. Still manage to work on cars with my uncle across the miles when I can. Love the cars.
I am amazed at all the young guys. We don't have many 18 to 40s guys into Model As around here. |

I an 70. Not gonna git old, just gonna keep having birthdays. Tillie was my first Model A. Been working on her - restoring and repairing since 1971 - I think that's 41 years. The hood was painted and installed last fall. The bed goes to the blaster today and the fenders are ready for paint. Goal is to have her finished by late spring or early summer.

I'm 61 and bought my first Model A a Briggs Fordor this Summer. Last Fall I bought a 30 coupe. I had been racing and restoring Harleys for 40 years until I had a heart attack and quintuple bypass 4 years ago and decided to give up riding bikes. I recently retired and needed a hobby. I'm really enjoy rebuilding and driving these cars.

I am 69. I am a retired farmer. I too was was a motorcycle rider and builder all my life. I bought an A 7 years ago and restored it as a driver with mods. We have now put 16,000 miles on it. I love driving the A and we enjoy the companionship of other A and old car people. I also have a T (for sale) and am starting to build a traditional flathead A-v8 roadster (Brookville body) Thankfully I am blessed with good health and hope I can continue.

Re: What age group???
I will be 79 in April. I am thankful that my health is good. I got my 1930 Town Sedan in 2005 and my 1930 deluxified coupe in 2006, both in restored condition. They were both driveable when I got them, and I have done a lot of work on each. I drive them whenever I can, year round. My favorite is the one I am driving at the time.

I'm 48.
Got my first "A" about 18 years ago. (basket case '30 ccpu and still working on it). Second "A" about 2 years ago. (nice '29 tudor, but needs engine work) Third and fourth "A" just this past summer.(one nice '30 tudor that needs engine work, other one is a '31 coupe that's totally disassembled but worth the headache. |

I'm 54 now, staring 55 in the eyes! Got my 28 sport coupe in 2010 and a 31 slant window in 2011. Sold the slant window last June so I could buy my 31 Victoria. I can't imagine not having an A to drive. It is my therapy for this hectic world.

Re: What age group???
I'm fifty one and have been in a model a since before I was born my father started restoring in the late 40s and I started handing him wrenches they tell me at two. I have had many A's over the years but my roadster ran for the first time Christmas eve of 1960, and I had to re restore it in the mid 90s after a major accident I will never part with it until my youngest son gets it from me. We had at one time a 28 pheaton brother has now, 12 t touring 29 roadster , 31 slant sedan ,my roadster, 31chevy cabriolet, 41 Chevy two door, numerous mustangs and two Shelby to name a few. I now have only one and that is enough after 40 years.

Re: What age group???
I'm 68 and going ..., well pretty strong! I bought my first A 3 years ago. I got it cheep in an auction. I found out why it was so cheep! Most part on the car needed rebuilding or replacement! I got seriously tired of reading about other people actually driving their A.s. So I went looking for a running A, found one and I love driving it and the grandkids love riding in the rumble seat.
When I was a kid, we had two AAs for farm trucks and that was my first exposure to them. I remember them sitting in the field with their grill shells sparkling. Terry |

I'm 58 and have three 1931 Model A's, 2 Model T's and a bunch of Dodge Brothers from 1920 to 1936 and at least one car from every decade from 1910's to the 2000's. My 40 Ford Tudor we have had since early 1965. I run around with a great bunch of guys and gals we affectionately call the "T-Bums". Life is great!

Bought my 31 coupe in 1988. All it needed was everything...so apart she came. Chassis done... but I'm still in the welding/patching stage on the body. I made some progress over the holidays, but my day job takes priority over the Model A, so it'll by a while yet before I can drive it. Reading the various entries it's really encouraging to see that younger folks out there are caring for Model A's. There was quite alot of talk a few years back of the "younger generation" will never appreciate an original Model A, and instead would only want the cookie cutter small block, chopped, yadayadayada. I think a bunch of you have proved them wrong |

Re: What age group???
I'm 35...
My dads a carpenter.absolutely no automotive role model.Awesome dad though. We did my buddies late 31 coupe that his mom and dad dated in(57) his first car . Loved it,BUT he let me drive his T touring..and I was hooked.I have had very fast cars but something to be said about taking your time and enjoying the ride. There is just nothing like these old cars.

I am 65 and played in a model A roadster thet was on jack stands and used to cut wood [belt off left rear wheel turning a circular saw blade] since I was 4 years old...shifted the throttle lever 1.4 millon times making engine noises......cried when grandpa traded it for a chain saw [an early McCullough weighting as the A].....

Re: What age group???
While pushing past seventy in years, I truly feel eighteen when I drive or touch my Model A.
In 1956, my dad in a suprise move after dinner piled the family into his Nash and drove to a huge estate that was being demolished. We walked into a darken carriage house and amongst the gloom and shadows stood a mint 1928 Leatherback Sdn. "You need something to do after school Mike", I heard my Dad say as I stood with gaping mouth. As it happened that sweet car came home right then and there. Fifty years later I rejoined the Model A Highway and found this stellar bortherhood of Model A enthusiasts. For me nothing quite meets the fun my wife and I have on the Highway. And, a huge thanks to the Ford Barn for its tremendous help and my wife for her understanding and participation. |

Re: What age group???
I'll be 68 in a month, have 4 A/AA's. Bought my first in 1959 for $20 and still have it =a 28/9 ccpu. Built a 29 tudor a few years back and now building a 30 AA truck. Have a doodlebug made from leftover parts also. All are running,
some better than others. I really enjoy reading the forums about what other people are up to with their model A's. It's all good stuff!! |

Re: What age group???
I'm 59, long-time interest in old planes and old cars, old cars are cheaper. My in-laws have been into Model A's and Model T's since their dad bought the family Model T in the 60's, I had to get "qualified" in the T before I could marry into the family. Bought our own Model A 22 years ago and added a few more since then.

Re: What age group???
64 plus here. Purchased my first Model A in 1979. Am finally restoring this one hopefully to National Show standards. It is a 1931 Late Tudor Deluxe Sedan.
Also preserving three original unrestored model A's that have each scored over 400 points in recent national meets. Working on an early 1931 roadster pickup to show in Touring Class and a late 30, early 31 AA157. Ray |
