Here's a style of hose clamp I haven't seen before. This was on the upper radiator hose on the Model A engine I've been cleaning and getting ready for paint. This one size fits all because you pick the hole that fits, bend the excess up and run the screw through the hole.

Those came packed 100 to a box,and they were flat until you did the bending.There was a little compartment that held the screws and square nuts.The square nuts were a little larger than they would normally be in their thread size.They were a brand name,I can't remember what is is,but it is something like Dorman or Gates.When I worked for a junkyard in 1976 we did a lot of old garage cleanouts,and I kept dozens of little trinkets like this.I wish I had kept more,as a lot of those shops had closed up during wartime.

Another different vintage kind; homemade :

In 1958 my Model A Coupe came adorned with hose clamps made from clothes hanger wires; e.g., with one (1) continuous coat hanger wire per each clamp.

One (1) continuous loop was provided for the bolt head side of bolt, another continuous loop was provided for the nut side of bolt, and (2) continuous wires from this single coat hanger were provided and spaced about 5/8" apart all around the circumference.

Worked well for a permanent hose clamp back then ...... or will work in a Model A emergency "if" one has a heavy duty coat hanger, (or a length of clothes line wire), a needle nose pliers, and a bolt with a nut.

We can all imagine a possible Forum question in a few years, such as:

"What is clothes line wire?"

As a kid we used to find metal strapping like that along the rail road tracks. Don't remember what the rail road used it for. We made some pretty loud whistles from it though.
We'd cut across the strap dead center through a hole, leave three holes and cut the next one dead center like the first one. Then bend it flat through the center hole so the ends match. Squeeze it flat between your front teeth and lips and blow like hell.
Mom called them spittle whistles cause it could get a little messy blowing them.

Looks like the strapping used to hold the sensor bulb for a refrigeration expansion valve onto the exit tubing of the evaporater. I never thought of them as being used for a hose clamp.

Those old WRAPLOCK hose clamps were handy. They were LOOOONG & straight, just pull them through to size & cut them off. They were used a lot, to secure hydraulic brake lines, also.
Has anyone used those PLASTIC hose clamps, that TIGHTEN with HEAT?

I used them on my heater hoses in the engine compartment. They work and look neat. I opted not to use them on the radiator hoses, only because they are a one time clamp. You have to cut them to get the hose off, then you need a new clamp.

If you read racing history from the teens and 20's you will see references to a Duesenberg hose clamp.Just mechanics wire wrapped around a hose and twisted tight with a pair of pliers,like a bag tie on a sack of feed.If you look at some of the pictures in Griffith Borgesons racing history book you can see several examples.He also claims more Duesenbergs showed up at Indy without paint than all the other cars combined.They always seemed behind the 8 ball on time to get things done.
