Super glue for rubber glass channel
I am about at my wits end. I am trying to glue the ends of some rubber glass channel for the rear window of my 29 CCPU. I used a super glue I bought at Harbor Freight first (it says on the package it was made in the USA) - the glue on the left in the picture. I thought since it was made in the US, it was good stuff. Both times I glued the ends together, the rubber channeling broke when I tried to stretch it around the glass. The rubber needs to be stretched very tightly to reduce or eliminate puckers on the corners. After the two failed gluing attempts I bought a different super glue - the glue on the right in the picture (made in Taiwan). It failed very quickly, actually worse than the first glue - pretty much worthless stuff. Each time I let the rubber set overnight after gluing the ends together to hopefully let it get to full strength, I cut the ends of the rubber channeling cleanly each time to make sure the previous glue residue was gone. The glues are not old and I opened both the first time when I tried to glued the rubber ends together. Does anyone now of a good glue to make a very strong bond to withstand stretching the rubber?
BTW, When I installed the rear window in my 28 coupe I glued the ends of the same type of rubber channeling together with super glue and it held fine when it was stretched over the glass. Actually I glued all three rubber channels for the rear window as well as the two quarter windows and all installed just fine, no breakage. Damn, I wish I could remember the brand of super glue I used, but that was 4 or 5 years ago. I know some brand of super glue will work, as the coupe rubber gluing did, but these two glues I already tried sure aren't it. Rusty Nelson |

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
Maybe try a little contact cement. They do make glue for rubber. check your local glass (auto) installers. Good luck

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
I did not use any glue and did it as Ford did it back then.
I streached the rubber all around and then cut to the lengths I needed for the quarter windows and the back window on my 1929 Standard Coupe. Then I butted up the two ends and with a small strip of thin cardboard within the channel, I stapled the two together. This was seen in varrious original channels and in my original coupe channels. Then streached the attached rubber channels over the window edges and inserted into the window area of the body. Has held together for the past 33 years. No glue needed nor was used. NOTE: On all rubber window channels such as these, the butted ends always go to the upper center of the window when installed. Pluck Last edited by Steve Plucker; 07-23-2016 at 03:46 PM. |

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
I used super glue on the puckered corners, then a piece of wood on each side of the pucker held tight with a C clamp.
That helped to keep the corners flat, but I recall having a problem with the ends also. I used the original brand of super glue, and it held after about 3 tries. |

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
Wet suit glue might work better, but hard to find in the midwest, might try ebay.

Rusty
when you glue the ends together do it on the window that way it gets a hold of the glass to, let it set up than stretch the rubber around the window. I think you might be cutting it to short to try to keep the puckers out of the corners. if it does pucker a little, just glue the corners down like Tom said. |

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
Take a rag wet with acetone and thoroughly rub the cut ends you wish to join. This will leach out much of the plasticizer added to the butyl rubber compound. Let the surfaces dry for several minutes then join. The cyanoacrylate should then hold.

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
Thanks, John and Mike for the tips. I do have some acetone, so I will clean the ends with it before my next gluing attempt. I have glued rubber channel ends together before like I mentioned in the first post. I just don't know why I can't do it now. I really stretched the rubber last time and the glue held fine.

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
I used "The Original" Superglue, which I get at the local True Value Hardware Store. It is my favorite. The other thing that I did was cut both ends perfectly straight and clean with a BRAND NEW razor blade so both side mated perfectly. Also, I want it to stretch the rubber, but not too much. I glue it before installing it on the glass. A few drops of glue, hold it together for about 30 seconds, and then stretch it around the glass.
That is what worked for me. I drive rain or shine and never get a leak in any of my windows. Ken

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
Are you sure the glue is failing and not the rubber ripping?

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
Yes, the glue is failing, not the rubber. I can see the remains of the glue on each end when the joint fails.

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
At an Auto arts Store, inquire about the glue that is used for making "custom" "O" rings.

Loctite sells a custom o ring kit that includes Loctite 406 instant adhesive.

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
I did what MikeK suggested and used some acetone to clean the ends of the rubber before gluing them together. However, I also use a third brand of super glue - see picture. Whatever I did worked fine and the rubber joint is holding fine. I don't know if it was the different glue, the acetone or both that made the joint hold. MikeK, thanks for the advice.

That's not the long neck bottles I'm used to!

Funny Mike V., but it worked better than the longneck you are referring to!

Re: Super glue for rubber glass channel
I am about to replace my rear window on my 29 CCPU. I ordered a replacement from Bert's got it quickly it was tempered glass. Carefully installed looked great!
A week later (truck is in AC shop) I opened the door and the glass had cracked vertically in the middle! Truck was never moved! So what gives?? I was very careful not to screw frame too tight. It cracked at the middle screw. I need to buy another one but thought someone might have had similar problem and a fix. thanks |
