Default First new block build.

Well, I suppose I have to tell everyone that I went down to Kevin Prus Jr.'s to see the first engine running. But when I got there, there was only silence. That's because he had shut it down as he slowly broke it in. He started it for me and I shot several minutes of video, that I will post on YouTube, asap. I don't mind saying I am happy the first one runs nicely with almost exclusively used parts. Proof that the block is fit to be a stock replacement block.

Stay tuned for the YouTube link.

Good job!

That engine should be installed in my Phaeton to be sure it gets a proper break-in.

Nice to see a newly OHIO cast block made a new Living ENGINE.. About 3 miles from my home Ford used to cast lots of Engine blocks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXtuJRHo1U8

Tod's is very likely the first new auto Engine Block cast in OHIO since the Cleveland Casting Plant was wipe from the face of the Earth.

Don't think this is Tod's first engine cast in Ohio, just the first Model A engine.

This is true. I have cast many blocks here in the Youngstown area.

And, thanks for the good words, everyone.

I took my dad down to see it run today. He liked it very much.

I will probably just keep this one on a stand for viewing or to start up at shows like Hershey. Not sure yet. Junior and I were talking about it because we just don't know how big the market really is. As word gets out about the first successful build I will know more if there is enough of a market. Tire kickers and people that like it are not indication of the real market. The next 6 months or so will tell how this will go.

I would believe that the engine re-builders would be very interested because they already have all the machines and experience, they could charge more of course for a short or long block "New Engine" and people will pay. As the word gets out I would not be surprised that you will getting calls from them.

Tod, thanks for sharing those videos.

The video about pouring the block was great. I enjoyed the explanation on screen and the Led Zeppelin music. The one entitled machining the block seemed to be more about assembly than machining.

Have a couple questions:

1. Is the block poured from new material or can/did you melt down an original block or two for the material?

2. How do you check to see if the material flowed into every place it should have? Perhaps you could use Tom Wesenberg's invention to check for cracks and leaks by using air pressure.

3. I'd love to see a video that shows how the machining is done. Any other videos coming up?

Tod, thanks for your work and the videos. I wish you well in your endeavors.

At this point in my life, I guess I would fall into the "tire-kicker" category. I just installed a "new" Ron Kelley engine in my pickup (600 miles ago) and do not perceive needing another engine anytime soon. Even then, my source would be thru an engine builder. I don't possess the skils or equipment to produce an engine that I would be satisfied with, but rather rely on the professionals that do.

As JoeK posted above, and confirmed by Ron when I had my engine built, good usable blocks are about as scarce as hen's teeth. Had a "new" block been available, I have no doubt I'd be running one right now.

I applaud the time and effort that Tod has put out in getting his engine to this point. Sorting thru engines like these to find that one good one may become a thing of the past.

For now though, I'm just a "tire kicker".

Nice work Tod. I have a 427 side oiler block in one of my cars that you designed - I bet the A blocks are just as good.

I'm hoping these will be better yet.

I just sent this message to Steve Hackel about the build.

"Steve, there is nothing special about the build. Snyder's 6:1 head, .060 over pistons, Babbitt mains, and my own pressurized oiling design. When it get up to running temp the pressure drops to a steady 30 lbs. But the front cam journal wasn't perfect so there was probably more pressure to be had with a perfect bore. It is a stock oil pump. I have plans to add bosses inside the valve cover chamber for a pressure relief valve and for a plumbing option for a full pressure oil filter like the one Snyder sells right now. Things will only get better from here.

This may seem to be a trivial question but to me it is a big deal is it possible to stamp a serial number in it and match exactly what the factory did? The reson I ask is my serial number is the only thing tying it to the title and I am thinking that building a new motor makes sense.

I don't see any reason you couldn't stamp your number in one of my blocks. Only real model A people could tell it is a replacement block.

I understand. I have 2 aluminum blocks underway and I can make iron any time. I have 3 sets of cores ready for iron right now. Now that I know the blocks are fully capable I can start to get into casting mode. I know there are many that have been waiting so I guess the ramping into production can begin.

I don't have any firm list, having refused to take block deposits before now. I imagine that if I say I'm ready to go the many dozens that have expressed interest will be ready to go as well.

Thanks. I hope I can help many with a stock-ish engine that has pressurized oiling throughout.

Wow! Where have I been? I guess I've been sniffing too many Babbitt fumes tearing 5 old blocks apart to get one good one. I am an engine builder and just found out about this today from waxhead in Australia.... I would like to get in line for one asap. I have a 170 HP Miller build for my roadster going and could put one of these to the test. I know these will sell especially when you get the iron one going.

Just a note: The oil filter that Snyder's sells will not work with your new cast iron header. I opted for a remote filter system that works great with your header.

So maybe a different design would be in order to go with that. Snyder has the other one that is part of the side front cover. I haven't looked to see if that works.

I wonder how many more builders are out there that haven't heard yet.

I have 3 iron castings to make and one aluminum. As the word gets out and this gains momentum I hope there will be sales enough to make it all worth the effort.

I think this project will be well worth the effort Tod. I know Turlockmachine, did an article on them. They have built several engines for the folks that have traveled with me and they are holding up well. Probably be a good customer for you on the west coast. I know Scotty and you have been in contact and he will be stopping in soon, looking forward to putting an article in the Model A Times with pictures and video of your running engine!

I sure hope so, John. I appreciate all the support from people like you. I don't expect to get rich from this but it would be nice to have it support some travelling with my wife around various parts of the country to visit shows and chat with folks and hear the history that is plentiful surrounding the hobby.

Looking forward to working with reputable dealers and hearing their input. Also, we have the engine still in place waiting for Scotty. Sorry, but my shop is still a mess.

Tod,
Don't worry about the mess you should see my shop! LOL If you want to introduce your block to the west coast, I have an inside booth at the Turlock, CA swap meet it is put on by the local Model A club and is one of the largest swapmeets on the West Coast, the last week end of January. You can set up a display block and talk to lots of Model A folks that weekend. If you think it would be something you would be interested in Scotty could haul some stuff back for you saving the shipping.

Mine is one of the Genesis versions, I think they were cast in Indianapolis right? I met you back around 2001 at the all Ford show in Columbus I think. Glad to see you are making Model A blocks. How about making a 5 main Model T block in your spare time?

I'm hoping these will be better yet.

Take care,

The Genesis blocks were first cast in Indy, then Columbus, Indiana, and then I was pushed out of the way after they went belly-up and were bought out. I don't know where they went after that. That's when I teamed up with Pond to do our own.

I hear there is no market for T blocks. The "spare time" part made me laugh out loud. Thanks. Always good to keep in touch with guys from past projects. Hope all is well.

I picked up the first aluminum block yesterday at the foundry after heat treat. I will start pecking away at that one while I am getting ready to cast the first aluminum 5 main block.

Tod, efforts like what you are doing with this block project, will ensure the future of the Model A hobby for a long long time.

Thanks too much as Charlie Chan would say

Sounds great to me! Any cost estimates when they are put into production?
