Nice to see a newly OHIO cast block made a new Living ENGINE.. About 3 miles from my home Ford used to cast lots of Engine blocks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXtuJRHo1U8

Tod's is very likely the first new auto Engine Block cast in OHIO since the Cleveland Casting Plant was wipe from the face of the Earth.

Don't think this is Tod's first engine cast in Ohio, just the first Model A engine.

This is true. I have cast many blocks here in the Youngstown area.

And, thanks for the good words, everyone.

I took my dad down to see it run today. He liked it very much.

I will probably just keep this one on a stand for viewing or to start up at shows like Hershey. Not sure yet. Junior and I were talking about it because we just don't know how big the market really is. As word gets out about the first successful build I will know more if there is enough of a market. Tire kickers and people that like it are not indication of the real market. The next 6 months or so will tell how this will go.

I would believe that the engine re-builders would be very interested because they already have all the machines and experience, they could charge more of course for a short or long block "New Engine" and people will pay. As the word gets out I would not be surprised that you will getting calls from them.

Tod, thanks for sharing those videos.

The video about pouring the block was great. I enjoyed the explanation on screen and the Led Zeppelin music. The one entitled machining the block seemed to be more about assembly than machining.

Have a couple questions:

1. Is the block poured from new material or can/did you melt down an original block or two for the material?

2. How do you check to see if the material flowed into every place it should have? Perhaps you could use Tom Wesenberg's invention to check for cracks and leaks by using air pressure.

3. I'd love to see a video that shows how the machining is done. Any other videos coming up?

Tod, thanks for your work and the videos. I wish you well in your endeavors.

At this point in my life, I guess I would fall into the "tire-kicker" category. I just installed a "new" Ron Kelley engine in my pickup (600 miles ago) and do not perceive needing another engine anytime soon. Even then, my source would be thru an engine builder. I don't possess the skils or equipment to produce an engine that I would be satisfied with, but rather rely on the professionals that do.

As JoeK posted above, and confirmed by Ron when I had my engine built, good usable blocks are about as scarce as hen's teeth. Had a "new" block been available, I have no doubt I'd be running one right now.

I applaud the time and effort that Tod has put out in getting his engine to this point. Sorting thru engines like these to find that one good one may become a thing of the past.

For now though, I'm just a "tire kicker".

Nice work Tod. I have a 427 side oiler block in one of my cars that you designed - I bet the A blocks are just as good.

Good to hear from you Royce. Do you have one of my Genesis versions or the Pond version?

I'm hoping these will be better yet.

Take care,

Tod

I just sent this message to Steve Hackel about the build.

"Steve, there is nothing special about the build. Snyder's 6:1 head, .060 over pistons, Babbitt mains, and my own pressurized oiling design. When it get up to running temp the pressure drops to a steady 30 lbs. But the front cam journal wasn't perfect so there was probably more pressure to be had with a perfect bore. It is a stock oil pump. I have plans to add bosses inside the valve cover chamber for a pressure relief valve and for a plumbing option for a full pressure oil filter like the one Snyder sells right now. Things will only get better from here.

This may seem to be a trivial question but to me it is a big deal is it possible to stamp a serial number in it and match exactly what the factory did? The reson I ask is my serial number is the only thing tying it to the title and I am thinking that building a new motor makes sense.

I don't see any reason you couldn't stamp your number in one of my blocks. Only real model A people could tell it is a replacement block.

I understand. I have 2 aluminum blocks underway and I can make iron any time. I have 3 sets of cores ready for iron right now. Now that I know the blocks are fully capable I can start to get into casting mode. I know there are many that have been waiting so I guess the ramping into production can begin.

I don't have any firm list, having refused to take block deposits before now. I imagine that if I say I'm ready to go the many dozens that have expressed interest will be ready to go as well.

Congratulations on a awesome task. Know there are many out there that would like a new block to start a engine build.
