Suicide Doors
I always thought that suicide doors on Fords were available only in '33 and'34. But I have seen several that do not appear to be '33 or '34. i.e. '32 radiator/grill. Were they available in other years as well, or are these I've seen not restored to original?
And why are they called "Suicide" doors? (just wonderin') |

Re: Suicide Doors
The 1932 Deluxe Coupe (often referred to as the 3-Window) came with "suicide doors".

Re: Suicide Doors
I think the term "suicide doors" was coined due to the fact that since the doors are facing forward, if you were to try opening them while under way, the wind would catch the door, and if you were holding onto the handle, would drag you out into traffic, thereby committing certain suicide.
The rear doors on Model A 4-door sedans were "suicide" doors, as were the rear doors on my first vehicle, an AA 280A.

Re: Suicide Doors
I think that the rear doors were suicide on Ford four door cars through 1948. Mercury used them through 1951

Re: Suicide Doors
I thought the term suicide doors had to do with crashes where the A pillar moves at the latch and the door flies open losing the strength the door provides the body
