Question 1929 Pickup Headliner

When I bought my 1929 pickup, it came with the fabric for the headliner in a bag. I cannot figure out how to install it. The ceiling is just a series of wooden spars going from front to back. I suppose I could staple it up, but then would need to cover each row with something. Any help would be appreciated.

Bob there is a great how to in the Les Andrews Model A Ford Handbook vol. 2 on installing the roof on a 1929 Closed Cab Pick Up. I think it is vol 2, maybe vol.3, I don't have them in front of me.

There is no headliner on the '28 or '29 CC Pick-Up. There is a black "sheet-like" material that is installed directly on top of the bows. Then chicken wire goes on top of the black material. The cotton batting material is installed next and finally the vinyl top material is installed. It's not quite that simple but that is the sequence of the materials that are used. There are some that do not use the chicken wire as I understand the original CCPU did not use it. I believe it gives a little extra support and prevents sagging. IMHO. Don/WI

I believe what Don/WI is saying is that the wood bows are exposed.

It's muslin, often called broadcloth, and gets stretched tight over the TOP of roof rails and tacked around the perimeter. This is applied before the top pad and top material is applied. I would not use "chicken wire". It stretches and doesn't return so it offers little or no support. And, it often "shows through". If you install the muslin tight, you will not have sags.

This picture is from a 26 Closed Cab Model TT but it had the same top arrangement.
