Default Water pump grease

I made the mistake of not using water pump grease for the water pump and found oily gunk when checking radiator, did not pump much in it. Bought water pump grease and will use it now on, (only one pump). Changed engine oil at same time and did not found any water in old oil. Cleaned the gunk out.

You are using too much grease. Use regular wheel bearing grease not waterproof grease.

Specifications can be found in the November 1932 Ford Service Bulletin.

For the water pump, Ford specified pressure gun lubricant. Ford recommended NOT to use a "water pump grease" which is grease with a higher melting point than the water temperature reaches. Ford was afraid that globs of grease could break free and infiltrate the radiator and clog the tubes. The lower melting point wheel bearing grease could liquidfy and pass harmlessly through the system. This is probably why Ford recommended frequent regreasing of the water pump bearings.

I've been there with grease in the oil but I now use Penrite Water pump grease sparingly to which I add some graphite powder but my water pumps have a modern seal - not the nitrile double lipped seals in the so called leakless pumps. Mine ARE leakless and will be more durable.
