always interesting to watch things in action.. sure a lot of play in things. I looked at the rear axle video and would note that some of the methods used are not recommended rebuilding standards. I would never peen an axle keyway to repair it... replace the axle and of course there are other issues.

I sure would hate to end up with a Model A that these guys redid the axle. Chiseling the differential side carrier bearing for a tighter fit, not knurling, emerying the drive shaft with the rear drive shaft bearing exposed to all the grit coming off. Who has these atrocious work habits? You fit all your bearings before assembly not after. Send these guys a copy of Tom Endy's rear axle sheets and retrain them.

Did it fix the problem or just mask it?
What I am seeing is a little different. I see several things that appear to be WAY out of specification or tolerances. To begin with, the front radius rod (wishbone) appears to be worn out and is sliding in all directions in the clutch housing allowing the front axle to do the same. Not only does this create steering that is all over the place, but it affects braking efficiency on the front axle, and will probably wear those new Firestones much quicker. Think about it, if the axle is allowed to move because the radius rod ball cannot hold it in alignment, that will cause the vehicle to yaw. The rear spring is also creating issues as it has lost its' arch creating a rocking action on the spring hangers (shackles). Look at the location of the hangers and you will see they are near vertical. Even the shackle bushings appear to be worn as you can see the movement in the video. I also question whether the rear shock(s) are either properly adjusted, -or even working at all just by the rebound. Also adding to the poor handling is the badly warped rear wheel, ...which will also cause some premature wear on that new Firestone. It also appears the front spring is sagging based on the clearance between the drag link and the tie rod. During a hard bump, it appears the drag link is touching the tie-rod which in all likelihood is momentarily bending the tie-rod just enough to create a quick toe-out condition (which generally will cause darting). Thanks for posting the video and letting me comment. I honestly think it would be prudent to rebuild the suspension on the front & rear, and I'll bet you would find the car is much nicer to drive. |

In addition a set of wheels that were reasonably straight would help a lot, and installing brakedrum cooling rings seated properly, before buying new tire's.
