1936 driver side door latch

My spring was broken, have two, now one new one because I over loaded , as usual for me. Can’t determine what keeps the coiled spring in place behind the striker. I’ve googled pictures, dropped the spring back like it was but can’t tell what to lay it against behind the striker? Anybody? Help. Thanks, Greg. The picture is not my part. Just for example

You need this clip that slips thru the slot on the frame and holds the spring in place. Some vendors may have them or you possibly can fabricate one.
Maybe this 2nd pic is better.You can see that once the spring is in that clip ,the clip is pinched shut.

I knew something was missing, couldn’t find anything in the bottom of the door, I’ll look for it this afternoon. Thanks

The clip you need is not an original part of the latch. It is a repair part, the original was part of the housing that has broken off. So the repair part will not be found in the bottom of the door.

Maybe a little clearer picture. The arrow points to the original ears that retain the spring. Many times these ears break off when spread to replace a broken spring. The piece that Deuce posted is a repair piece made take the place of the broken ears.

Rich b's picture is the way it should go in. I just replaced both of mine in my 35 and its not easy. You need to spread those tabs apart and compress the spring using vise grips, then twist it into place.

The tabs are good, marked in red, the blue area is what I was struggling with. By this picture my spring must have been upside down. The little rubber piece at the striker was also gone, I made one. I’m going to try it again. The door worked perfect before, I would show it to interested parties how nicely it open and closed. The only thing I can see would hold the little crooked S shape of coil is the end of striker, I’ve tried it both ways and it kicks back out. I’ll post results later

Thanks, where exactly did you rest the end of the coil? Will it find its sweet spot on its own? Like.. hey I didn’t pop out! This is it!

When I replaced my springs, one of the holding tabs broke off so I cut the other one off and welded new pieces of metal back in and bent it to replicate the original. Sorry, I did not get pictures.
