Default Ignition for engine on static stand

I have an engine that I want to run on a static stand. I am not sure how to wire up the ignition. I have an aux ignition cable that screws into the distributor with an alligator clip at the other end. When screwed into the dist., do I attach the alligator clip to the + side of the coil? Then do I provide the Neg wire of a battery to the - side of the coil. I have a + ground 6 volt system and ground the Pos side of the battery to the engine.

Also I have a car with a neg ground 12 v system. This is a running car and I want to know how to hot wire it if the ign. switch fails. Do I do it the same? That would be to put the aux ignition cable screwed into the dist. and the alligator clip to the + side of the coil?

Thanks for your help. I did it wrong once and burned up the points. And then again I did it correctly and it worked. Just don't know how I did it for sure.

Thank you much

Yes, this is how you wire it. When the battery is + ground, then the + of the coil goes to the points.

When the battery is - ground, then the - of the coil goes to the points.
