Default Pickup spare tire

I've seen pictures of pickups with spare tire on right fender and others with the spare on the left side. What is the rule about this? Were they manufactured both ways?

Mine is on the left - I've seen one with spares on both sides
Most of the ones I've seen are on the left, if they have one

Mine is late 31 and has spare on the right. I've always wondered about this.

I had a 30 pickup with the spare on the right and was told it was a phone truck and that some of the companies had the tire on the right side so easier to get in and out. Don't know for sure but was told that. He is a picture of a phone truck I found. http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/pages01/f1003101.htm

I think standard pick ups all had the spare on the driver's side. Right side spares and dual sidemounts were a special order or a dealer modification.

The factory photos I am familiar with all show a 'welled' fender on the driver side.

The factory brackets would have been riveted. Add ons would have been bolted.
My opinion.

I used to take care of a 29 closed cab with a right side spare. The bracket was riveted, not bolted, and the left side had dimples but no holes.Everybody always kind of surmised that it was an old phone company truck. The owner loved it that way.He didn't have to squeeze in and out,and he didn't care about the passengers. If they didn't like it they could find their own ride.
