Default Torque Tube Carrier Bearing

I am in search of expertise on the repair/re-install of old ford rear end. Specifically, carrier bearing in my 1934 Sedan. Seems they are not produced any more. I am replacing banjo reared with new (old but still good). When I removed the assembly, the carrier bearing had come out of the pressed in position within the torque tube and was freewheeling around the back of the solid driveshaft. Bearing appears ok, no chunks and still surely in tact. no apparent pits in bearings. No sign of excessive wear. However, fact that it was loose in the tube has me concerned about re-using. Are there rebuilt options? am I forced to consider open driveshaft? If so, must I split the wishbones for open driveshaft?

What are you calling the carrier bearing, I would call 4221 the carrier bearing.

Do you mean the midpoint bearing in the torquetube? Those weren’t used in 34 Fords, so how did you get one? A 34 should have a hollow tube driveshaft, and no bearing at the middle. I’m pretty sure they started using those about 38 with the solid shafts.

yes. center bearing in the torque tube. Midpoint bearing.
Seems it has been replaced with later model that the 34. It is a solid shaft and not a hollow as Alchemy states. sorry for confusion. The car was modified before I got it. Any assistance on where I can get said bearing?

If you have the torque tube center bearing (which 33-34 does not) Skip Haney in Fla has a replacement at a much lower cost than the original style Ford. I believe Skip has a web site.

(years ago)I bought a (dentless) ,online, '36 half-ton. I bought it as soon as I saw the photo ad. Paid the $12,000; had it shipped.

Upon arrival, drove it w/a neighbor. Woah! unbelievable screeching/squealing WHAT'S THAT!. (apparently that's why he, the seller, sold it.)we didn't know about the torque tube bearing, obviously the seller didn't either. But we soon found out!

knocked the bearing unit out of the tube w/a crowbar; bearing was a standard size; hardware store had it. Knocked it back in.
* be sure to line up the bearing unit with the grease fitting on the tube!(the grease fitting is on the TOP side of the tube; the grease simply drops on the bearing unit. The bearing was never greased! (the bearing was in indescribable shape.)

Regardless if his car has the torque tube center bearing, you're a brave soul to try and replace one.

I just had Larry Shepard install one in my ‘46 torque tube, using a KRW tool designed for the job. It’s pretty straightforward. Without the tool, it would be quite a challenge. I assume you could make up something with a long threaded rod to pull the bearing in. Larry is in St. Charles, MO and goes by Larry 40 on Fordbarn, I think

I have the KRW tool to do this job, and if you lived closer to me, I would install a new one (if you found one) for you. I think I put pictures of the tool in my MISC album.
