Four blade fans where for commercials as they went slower & more likely to overheat when going slow hauling a load , If fitting the alloy 2 blade don,t forget the steel washer under the nut, this will keep the blade tight on the taper.

After an original steel fan broke apart and nearly tore apart my radiator, I will never use or recommend using an original fan of any sort.

Out in the open as this is, I am thinking maybe an outlet per side would be in order.
There are a variety of aftermarket electric fan controllers that use a probe that goes in between the fins of the radiator to sense the temp.

Installed a new Snyder alum. fan on a new leakless pump. The castle nut provided with the pump wouldn't align with the cotter hole with a washer installed. The vendor's catalogue dwg. shows no washer but not sure if that's for a steel fan. The fan appears to fit the shaft and woodruff key very well and snug. Should a very thin steel washer still be used under the nut ?

yep, for sure if the fan is aluminum.

Using the side of your grinding wheel just lightly grind on the nut a little at a time until you can get the cotter pin thru

Yes but, I checked the two I have and both were out of balance, one was quite a bit. I doubt this will have much effect, but it will increase vibrations somewhat. I wouldn't put one on with at least checking.

Okay thanks for the info. A thin washer makes sense.

Yes but with a thermal switch you only need one wire to the sensor and it makes for a "cleaner" installation. I would use a relay with the thermal switch tho so all the amps don't go through the thermal switch.

Why not just keep it simple and reliable, and install a new 2 blade aluminum fan?

Macs has two different two blade fans, one cast aluminum and one steel. I have the cast aluminum but haven't got it on yet, still have the original.

I store my unused 4-blade fans wiped down with non-detergent oil

I would definitely add some marvel mystery oil to the mix.

Since this thread has already gone all over the place I'll put in a plug for the six-blade plastic fan, if you don't insist on the original look.

One I found at the bottom of a creek, very few pits, great shape! The other I found in a scrap yard, One blade was just sticking out from a pile! It was a little bent but I put it in the vice and squeezed it and banged it back with a big hammer, Works great! LOL
Seriously, One was bought at a swap meet and the other was was purchased from Snyders two years ago.

That is what I now have after the 4-blade "truck" fan that came wiht my vehicle took out my radiator when the rivets decided to self destruct.

I use 1/2 Delo 400 10w/30 and 1/2 ZDDP. Anyone who uses otherwise would be a fool!

Dick, I am hoping that you are having a little fun and humor with us, with that remark.

Otherwise it might be construed as being rude, and not in keeping with respect for other's view points.
