Default Overdrive ID

Just visited a friend that has a late 31 standard coupe with an overdrive. Unit is on the back of the tranny and appears to be solid to the torque tube. In the back there is a spacer that sticks forward from the banjo about 6". I believe that is the location of the u-joint. It is bolted to the banjo like a regular torque tube but the front looks like it could move.

Anybody have any information or pictures? I didn't have my camera and it is very greasy. Obviously has not been out for a very long time. I'll try to get some pictures.
Thanks--John

Being familiar with those OD's, it is neither. This is something that is old stock. The basic unit is between the rear of the tranny and the center cross member if that helps anyone.

How about a Columbia unit, if you google Columbia Overdrive there are several pictures.

These are the best I could do without having it on a lift and not steam cleaned. The last one came out upside down. Rotate in your mind.

John, when you first posted that, in my mind I had kinda envisioned a Twin-X or similar unit but what I think this may be, is a free-wheeling unit. Are you certain it is an overdrive??

I ageee with Brent it appears to be a free wheel unit. I have one that I am planning to donate to the museum next time I'm up there
Yours is not big enough to house gears for an overdrive. Just a dog clutch for free wheel

They are dangerous in today's roadways so be careful if you're using it

Thanks for the ID. Free wheeler seems logical.

I do not own it. Have never seen one so this is a first for me.
The owner says it doesn't work but I'll bet he never tried it as a free wheeler.

I'll pass the information on.

In a show downtown a couple of weeks back, there was a 32 Chevy with a freewheeling control in the dash board, just forward of the steering wheel. I should have crawled under to see it better. Perhaps some Chevy guy could chime in here and identify it?

My Dad had a 32 Chevy and the freewheeling unit did not look anything like this. This thing looks like a large power house generator. Hope to pull the floor boards and with a lot of scraping, find out if there is a name.

If you look in the Unauthorized Accessory book you will find several free wheel units. Mine is one of them. There were many on the market back then.
