I have a Starrett that was my dad’s that I brought back from NZ earlier this year. At least 50 years old but like new.

My machinist gave me a piece of machined 3/8" thick by 2" wide Aluminum about 2' long. I also use a SPI 18" flexible ruler on body panels both to check for highs and lows as well as marking straight lines across curved panels etc etc. SPI also makes a "rigid" rule as well

You can get "close" with a good ruler but a proper ground machinist straight edge is really what's needed to measure such things.

Another vote for a Starrett. Make sure its long enough to other engines as well.

I'd get a 24" Starret . . . you should be able to find a good used on eBay. Make sure you get the thicken one (that isn't flexible). Another option is McMaster-Carr - and a precision ground and heat-treated length of rectangular bar stock. Depending on the part#, you can usually get one with a +- .001 tolerance.
