Default carb question

I have a 65 autolite 4100 on my 57 now, unfortunately, the air cleaner sits at an angle due to the choke position. If I am able to grab an original 57 carb and find enough parts to rebuild it-is it worth it? I mean is it going to perform the same as the 65?

Post Re: carb question

What part of the choke mechanism interferes with the air cleaner? Is the ACL FORD (what year) or aftermarket?

FORD had a lot of trouble with the 1957 F4100 (if you can find one). It was redesigned for 1958.

1965 is the FORD redesign of the original 1958-1964 4100.

I figure there were problems since it was a one year only before a redesign. The choke body sits high enough to interfere with the air cleaner so that the only way it sits with the choke in one3 of the indentations is with the intake at about 5 instead of 3 o clock. That is really the only reason.

Question Re: carb question

... hmmpf ...

The 1957 4100 had a divorced choke whereas the 1958 4100 was redesigned to bring the choke assembly closer to the main body. The 1957/58 HOLLEY 4150 also fit under the ACL and was the same basic design as the 1958 4100.

The 57 and 58 FYB ACL was the same. Are you sure it is a 1957 ACL?

Can you show a photo(s)?

Mike, I’m not sure I understand just what’s off, but these spacers are cheaper and come in a variety of heights. It’s what I used on my bird so the original a/c would clear the Edelbrock carb.

K, I will post some photos tonight of the air cleaner and carb. I will look for the spacers as that may be the route I can go. I have not check yet to see how much clearance I have between the hood and the air cleaner. But there is an original 57 4100 on ebay now for a bit more than I want to pay for a core and there is a swap meet coming up this weekend. But my carb looks like your 3rd photo.

A couple wadded up balls of aluminum foil on the air cleaner, bit of painters tape, and close the hood gently. Fastest, easier way I ever found to measure hood clearance.

Question Re: carb question

... hmmpf ...

I usually just slam the hood and if I see a wing nut, I know it is too tall ...

I had same problem with a ford 302. rolled a piece of sheet metal the correct size and height so choke cleared the air cleaner.
