Default ‘46 Choke and Throttle rods

I’m about to refinish my choke and throttle rods on my ‘46 Mercury. I need to replace the rubber flex joints on the motor side of the firewall. I have purchased the flex joints from Dennis Carpenter, and I’m wondering the best way to install them. I’m planning on grinding off the sleeves of the old ones, but I’m wondering how to crimp the new ones on to the old rods. I’m thinking of using a heavy chisel to “swage” the flex joints to the rods. Or use a press to crimp them??? How have you done it?

Thanks
