Default transmission

on my current lucy restoration i am now going thru the trans, basically just opening it up looking for cancer, upgrading / freshening the bearings and shafts with orings etc . the trans worked fine and was quiet no whines. the only main thing i came across was the input shaft pilot was welded and ground, also loose on the pilot bearing. i heard of buying a different pilot bearing with a smaller input hole and turning down the nose to fit. anyone do this ? i am thinking of buying new input shaft usa made and hoping it does not create a whine. you can see more pics of this project in my lucy restoration album..

Yes my car has the turned down shaft. The bearing, and I don't know the size off hand comes in two different inside bores( the same OD).works just as well as the normal one.

While that looks like a very poor welding job, it should work if it is the right size.

My choice would be to weld it up and turn it back to stock size, but either way should work fine.

What I did on a couple of input gears is, turned the worn part down true, the made press fit sleeves for them, then you can stay with the standard bearing.

You could turn the nose of shaft down to accept a#203 Special brg which has a smaller ID.It would be wise to leave a note to the next owner of the car of the change ,otherwise he wouldnt be able to fit another trans into the pilot brg!

When securing some bearings for Sear's lawn equipment, I found that some of their bearings are the same O.D. as some standard bearings, but the I.D.s are smaller! Bill W.

Your "note" reminded me, I have always put a folded $5.00 bill under the L/F scuff plate on every Model A I've owned. (Emergency gas money) I'm sure that I have forgotten to retrieve some when I sold the cars. NOBODY ever looked me up to return it!
Chief always carried a $50.00 bill, folded lengthwise in the sweatband of his hat. Bill W.

The sleeves I made myself , turned them out on a lathe.

Bill, a friend who recently passed away hid emergency cash everywhere, and a car sold after his death turned up $150 in 50 cent pieces (he got rolls from banks, removed the silver ones, and sold them for ~$3.00 apiece or so). The car was sold to some youths who turned up several days after the car sale to return the cash to his grateful widow; maybe there is hope after all. Still looking for a pistol and ammo he hid somewhere....

Rich,
After Momma passed away, we found $21,000 above the little square lid in her closet ceiling! The clue was a little step stool she always kept in the closet, with bits of grass & dirt on the steps.
A friend hides stuff in the same kind of closet hole that drops down to the crawl space.
I keep my "GLOCK" in the bottom of my pillow case. (Only the Dog knows!) Bill W.
