Default Copper B Head Gasket

I am just finishing up my engine after a extensive refresh and am about to install a copper B head gasket on an A engine with a 5.5 head.

Which side of the gasket faces the head, or does it matter?

Thanks

Dick

on a copper gasket, or any gasket one side will be smooth, the other side around the cylinder bores will be a crimp that crimp goes against the head, the idea being that an engine viberation is delevoped by the pistons firing and may cause wear at the crimps, its easier to surface the head than the block to remove the wear

Yes. A "B" head gasket is recommended by Snyder's for the 5.5 head.

Thanks ford3. That makes sense and it is the way I will do it.

I don't really know. I bought it from Mac's a couple of years ago. Hope that it works!! I did spray is with copper spray on both sides prior to installing. It looks like the one in your picture.

The head gasket Snyder's recommends for the 5.5:1 head is not a copper head gasket, it is head gasket Snyder's sells that is coated with silicone ; additional high temp silicone bands surround all water passages. Install with no additional sealants.
Snyder's listing: B-6051-M (for 1932-34 and Snyder's 5.1 or 6.1 Head).

Thanks Ron. Yes, I am aware of this and have used the silicone coated gasket in the past. I did contact Snyder's at the time that I bought this gasket and they stated that as long as it was a B gasket it should work. We'll see!! The only reason that i am using this gasket instead of the silicone gasket is because I have it in stock. Trying to save a few dollars.

I may be a bit late on this one but I always use a copper asbestos head gasket, the reason is you can always use it a second time in an emergency

18 miles in NZ and I would be home with most of the water intact
What I meant was the other sticky type gaskets have to be scraped off so you have nothing left

Brother Tanglefoot, I knew what you meant, just havin' a little fun! We could be brothers, with my braces, I often tangle my feet & CRASH!
Chief knew an old man who took 2 used head gaskets, layered them with # 2 Permatex, and ran his '29 Chevrolet for years!! Bill W.

Bill: I'm with Chief and his friend. Plastic, silicone, epoxy, whatever, #2 Permatex is all a mechanic needs. Carry it in your tool kit. (#3 is convenient on occasion.)
