Model A mystery carb...
Carb off the "new" '29 engine... sadly, the throttle-body lost an ear in the same accident that claimed the intake...
I am assuming this is a Tillotson, but the images on Google show die-cast upper body, this one is cast-iron... Plus the idle mixture screw on Tillys seems to point sideways, parallel to the throttle shaft; this one points forward and up at an angle, like a Zenith... More info: went back to garage for another look: round tag on bowl cover reads: 2405N, in an arch. Bowl has "Made in USA" cast into it on engine side, just below parting line. No other indentifying marks. Opened it up, and found something very intriguing: in photo 2, there is a rounded verticl profile on both the carb bowl and the cover; inside is a well with a jet in the bottom and a spring-loaded metering rod(?) & piston in the bowl cover, with a vacuum port in the throttle body, above the butterfly. Choke and throttle butterfly plates are steel, in brass shafts. The throttle butterfly does have some part numbers stamped, and a symbol that is basically the letter " -Z-" inside a split circle... Air horn has an inside diameter of 1-7/8" and an outside diameter of 2-1/16". Last edited by Special Coupe Frank; 09-03-2012 at 08:35 PM. Reason: more info |

Re: Carb ID - Tillotson ?
Looks kinda like a Tilly but then it doesn't. It seems to be missing the Tillotson markings. Ive got some Tilly's and Zenith's at the shop that need rebuilt if you need one.

Re: Carb ID - Tillotson ?
The silvery disc rivetted to the top of the cast-iron float-bowl cover has some numbers stamped into it, but I haven't found a name anywhere on the unit....
I have the broken-off piece of the throttle-body; if this carb turns-out to be something decent, I may have a go at brazing the TB back together... |

Re: Carb ID - Tillotson ?
It could be a tractor from that era. I tried a search of popular cars of that era and didn't match one.

Re: Carb ID - Tillotson ?
Zenith tractor carbs use the brass tags ... try google with Zenith a space then the number all enclosed in quotes.

Re: Carb ID - Tillotson ?
Could just be a period correct J.C.Whitney kind of carb. I'm kinda hoping someone else chimes in with an actual answer rather than our speculation.

By George, you have got it ! I wonder if the performance is any better than with a stock Zenith ? Damn shame about the mounting flange being broken.... SC Frank |

Re: Model A mystery carb...
yeah, you can try to repair it though and its apparently only worth $50 needing rebuilt. who knows on the performance factor its really hard to beat the old Zenith.

Re: Model A mystery carb...
Whatever carb you use, performance is limited by the small bore in the manifold just above the carb. Chief described that small bore as "HENRY'S GOVERNOR! "B" manifolds are larger & "A" manifolds can be bored out to use the larger bore "B" carb. But, how fast do we really need to go? Bill W.

Re: Model A mystery carb...
Good point, Bill...
Not necessarily looking for more speed out of my Flivver; just kind of curious about whether or not the vacuum operated power-valve improves performance / pulling under load.... Would like to know whether this carb is worth trying to revive... Thanks, SC Frank |
