model b tillotson carb
i recently found this carb in a box of stuff i had. i assume it is a tillotson, tho there are no markings on it except made in usa. looks in good shape,. has a cast iron top and pot metal bottom. my question: were these anything special? that is as far as running and pep. i will be putting it on my the b eng in my 31 pickup eventually, but had never heard of these much less seen one. thanks for any input. roger

Re: model b tillotson carb
Hmmm...look at the little circle with a rivet visible on the top of the float bowl. That sure looks like a typical Zenith number tag. Zeniths except those made for Fords all have that. It will have tiny numbers and letters under the paint. I have certainly never seen one like that, but I do believe it is a Zenith and the GAV certainly means some sort of application involving A's or B's!

Re: model b tillotson carb
I've never seen one like that . The cast iron upper housing will be a good feature and won't warp like other Pot metal-alloy carbs. The bowl looks very small and could hinder performance, but just a guess there.

With the B fuel pump the small bowl may not be an issue. I'd clean it up and run it. Its different enough to be a real conversation piece.

Re: model b tillotson carb
Tillotson made more than one carburetor, just like Zenith. It may be a replacement for the Model B engine. Someone dig up some old parts books!

Re: model b tillotson carb
It really must be a Zenith with that badge on it. But...what? When?

Re: model b tillotson carb
Curious, indeed. The alignment of the mounting bolt holes makes it look like it was intended for an A. It has the same type of right angle fuel line fitting as was supplied by Zenith for its later carbs that were designed as replacement on the Model A (but look like a B-carb). I wonder what venturi size it has? Call it an improved Tilly.

Re: model b tillotson carb
The odd thing is that on the upper part, not just the number tag but a lot of little details around throttle and above look Zenith, made just as on A-B carbs.
Down below, the thing looks like Tillotson architecture with the suggestion of slanted jet and tube and multiple details similar to Tillotson X. And of course the GAV clearly labels it as meant for Fords. Maybe you left a male Zenith and a female Tillotson in your box of stuff and failed to supervise them adequately? |

Re: model b tillotson carb
The GAV needle housing doesn't appear to thread in place like the model A Zenith or Tillotson carbs but may press in like the B Zenith . The throttle and choke openings appear larger than model A but is impossible to say for sure without measuring them.

Re: model b tillotson carb
I have one of these. The tag is stamped 2415N. I believe that there is another style, probably with just 2415 stamped that has a difference in having a gas pump. The throttle plate in mine is stamped with a Z and C21-93. The choke plate looks to be interchangeable with the Zenith B-1 and B-2.
I am certain that there is an article in a club magazine that includes this carburetor. Mine is assembled and ready to use, but I have not run it on a car. |

Did a search and found this "Restorer" magazine, Mar/Apr 1996, Page 10, "Model A Era Carburetors".

Re: model b tillotson carb
The only jet is the type that uses small holes in the side of a large diameter jet to allow some air to mix with the fuel before leaving the jet. This type of jet is used in the Marvel/Sears, Tillotson X, Tillotson F1b, and Rayfield carburetors.
