80 years ago today
Rough weather and a very rough day in general, but the allied invasion was a success. It was a time when an undivided America and the rest of the free world worked together to bring about Victory. We owe a debt of gratitude to these brave souls and we will not forget them.

We might have had our differences politically, but we weren't divided on knowing what evil was and what to do about it. God bless America!

Re: 80 years ago today
Unfortunately, a lot of these historic events are getting further and further into the past and thus becoming less relevant to the current generations.

tubman makes a very valid point. Sadly, it seems that each generation must learn the hard way as history fades away and is forgotten - only to be repeated.

We owe those allies a lot. Everything, in fact. We should all do our best to make sure our young people don't forget-starting with our own families.

Re: 80 years ago today
Great post GB in rememberance to this day, when I was rebuilding my 39 peeekup and removing old parts for repairs I often wondered what role the men who assembled my truck had in WW2.
Its proudly back together and driving these days always thinking of its beginnings on the assembly line. Sadly I'm in enough schools and Activism has erroded any form of Education |

Re: 80 years ago today
Russia today is doing the same thing Germany did in the 30's which led up to WWII
Unfortunately, certain politicians in this country have forgotten history and are not supporting Ukraine. Looks like another WW on the horizon.

Re: 80 years ago today
I often think of those brave young soldiers on that day. Many never made it onto the beach. Of those who did, many never made it off the beach. Even those who ultimately made it home were scarred for life. They sacrificed so much. For what? For us to live free. They are "the greatest generation".

Did you see the reception the D day veterans got from the French children? Seems the French teach history! They were the greatest generation without a doubt!!

Re: 80 years ago today
I think this pretty much summarizes the teaching of where we are re: our June 6,1944 WWII history.

Re: 80 years ago today
When I came home in July of 1964, I had the honor and privilege of starting my steel erection career as an Ironworker under the tutelage of an Airborne brother who made the jump into Bastogne. He eventually taught our apprenticeship classes and was always regarded with much esteem.
Fast forward to our war and my Airborne brothers who faced the same challenges but came home to a less than grateful nation. While we all bemoan the lack of respect demonstrated by this generation it began long ago in the ‘60s. In fact, we had a recent occupant of the White House voice his disdain toward men at the point of the spear. |
