Default Correct Spare Tire Carrier bolt for trunk...

This is for you guys who have original (unrestored) cars with trunks (no rumble seat)...

Can you please tell us just what type of bolt was used to attach the Spare Tire Carrier (top bolt...not the bottom two) to the body?

The Indianapolis Service Bulletin of May 2, 1928, in their "trunk to rumble seat conversion" tells us that this bolt used a castel nut and cotter pin...what about later asembled cars? Same thing or was it changed to a lock washer and regular hex nut?

Thanks for looking.

Steve,
Are you sure the bolt uses a castellated nut? The spare tire carrier I used on my 28 coupe had a large D nut in the carrier. All that was necessary was large bolt/lock washer under the bolt head to secure the spare tire carrier. It looks good. Maybe you are referring to a real early 28 carrier. My car is a Nov 28.

I will have a look at Dad's coupe tomorrow if I get to the farm. Working hard here to get the shop cleaned out to start putting sheetrock on the walls and an insulated door before putting in an electric heater, so time is a little pressed. Rod

I wonder if the "castellated nut" was used instead of the "Crowner",..
I think that's spelled correctly..

Yes, as that is what the May 2, 1928 FORD Indy Service Letter says:

Operation 3: "Remove bolt A-21144 from tire carrier bracket support nut A-21795 (Castle Nut), pin A-23531 (Cotter Pin)". This was going from a trunk to rumble seat...When the rumble seat was installed Ford used a different bolt, A-21136 plus the Castle Nut and Cotter.

My only thinking on this is this is the way it started out and Ford may have changed the way it was connected...I don't know. Would like to know when the change was made if any.

Need info from you guys who have original, unrestored Coupes and Roadsters to figure this out.

Thanks.

Pluck
