I'm about to go battery shopping for my 52 F1 still 6 volt system. Anybody out there running an 8V battery? And if so, any info on brand/part#/etc would be great!

Thanks and happy 4th everybody!!!

Wiggles:

You are wasting your money if you buy an 8 volt battery.
You would be much better of fixing whatever is wrong with your 6V system.
Do a SEARCH on 8V battery.

An 8 volt battery is a band aid for something that needs to be fixed.

If you do that be sure to get a ample supply of spare bulbs. You're going to need them.

If you're considering 8V you may as well go the whole hog and go 12V. A well maintained 6V system with the correct gauge battery cables is every bit as good and a 12 or 8 volt system. As others have said fix the 6V system on you pickup and you'll be much better off in the end. JMHO, good luck.

I ran an 8 volt on my 1949 Chevy pickup with no problems.

X2 post #2 & #3. Take the time to diagnose your issue and fix that!! It all starts with proper sized battery cables, next GOOD clean proper grounds. Then you have a good foundation for all the rest!!!

I needed to replace my ground wire and used a piece of welding cable. Made a big difference.

you must adjust your voltage reg. when using a 8 volt bat. or it will not fully charge.

Clean grounds and plenty of them. 2x on welding cable lines for battery connections.

The 6 volt system has been around for decades. Somehow people still got around.

I didn't read where he said anything was wrong with what he had . . . just that he was looking for a new battery?

I have been using 6 volt batteries from Batteries Plus in my 32 Cabriolet for the last 8 years or so - have worked really well and are very affordable (about $105 with a core). What I don't know is the size/shape of your battery - so the ones from BP may or may not be what you need . . . but I'd check them out.

If you don't drive the car all the time, then buy a low-amp battery tender . . . they keep the battery charged while you're not using the car. I always disconnect my battery cables from the car when in long-term storage (like the Winter months).

8-volt batteries are for golf carts or other battery stacks that actually used them. 6-volt regulators don't put out enough voltage to keep them charged. I don't know of any auto manufacturer that used an 8-volt system.

Fix the 6-volt system or go 12-volt but don't waist time with an oddball battery that isn't compatible with anything in the auto world.

There is always someone that states that it works good but the only way is works well is with a dead cell.

Yup- Nothing wrong with the truck, (well not in the 'Letrical dept- yet) an old timer mechanic friend suggested an 8V battery if I could find one for a little faster cranking/hot starting. Thanks for the BP suggestion.
