Rob, this is likely one of those '
He said/She said' myths that someone fabricated and people bought into it because it was believable. The worst thing about attaching to the middle of the front axle is the risk of damaging the lower edge of the radiator apron. Outside of that, for no more than a Model-A weighs, with constant (-or somewhat jerky) pulling action, there is hardly any chance of bending the axle beam.
