Just a thought: I had to fix one myself, so I took an old axle nut and sawed it in half, then clamped it to the axle threads with a vice grip and backed it off the axle. Naturally one should clean up any burrs on the nut after sawing. The nut is hard enough to force the thread form back in shape. If it gets to a point where it is hard to turn, take the two-part nut off, clean everything up and start again. This might save you the cost of a rethreading tool.
