I did what MikeK suggested and used some acetone to clean the ends of the rubber before gluing them together. However, I also use a third brand of super glue - see picture. Whatever I did worked fine and the rubber joint is holding fine. I don't know if it was the different glue, the acetone or both that made the joint hold. MikeK, thanks for the advice.
