Trying to re-stamp a number that is too light is not what you want to be doing.
Last time I did this I used a 3 lb hand sledge on an engine on its side in the engine stand, and gave it a single emphatic *whack*. Too light and you won't penetrate, then when you retry you will invariably create a double stamp that will look very suspicious. You might try putting a row of masking tape to serve as the left, bottom and right side of where you are stamping to try to keep them in line. Don't stamp through the tape, use it as your guide for straightness. If you are using the RestoStamps I found that the width of the area on the block is just about perfect for *A-------* with no extra spaces.

Ford stamped the blocks after they were painted.
