I didn't replace my 2003 Golf TDI with another diesel for that very reason.
The VW 1.6 diesels WILL burn waste automotive oil. I don't think I would try it in a TDI.

The TDI is a ‘one wire’ engine.. the harness and computer only need ignition input 12v..that makes it an easy engine to repower with. it’s a popular Jeep conversion.
