Well, after thinking about this 'wire down the shaft' comment, I am now wondering how they keep from wearing the insulation off the wire after you have made a few thousand turns of the steering...

Oh...makes perfect sense now. So I must have one '40 box and one '39 or earlier box. And all of the horn rods I have are pre- '40.

You might think about using brake line. You might also be able to use those large wire terminals to mount them. The terminals will fit over the end of the brake line. Make a jig to bend the curves...

There is a guy on ebay that sells metal reconditioned fenders. He takes trades also and gives pretty good value for them. This is where I got mine. Just be sure your wallet is fat.
