Original Canadian Lyon all chrome cover fit fine on Goodyear tire. Larger Firestone; not so much.

The metal tire cover (from the US) I believe you are referring to is the Lyon Cover, covered in the RG/JS as A-1395-C and A1395-D; all black enamel or black enamel face plate with Chrome outer cover....

Model A's manufactured by Ford of Canada used a mixture of Robertson and slotted screws.

The RG/JS has quite an extensive supplement if you want to learn more on Canadian A's.

I always shut the fuel off as an added safety measure, but no longer run the carb dry due to flash rusting inside the bowl.

x2 to what Brent said. Repairing or replacing sloppy throttle shafts goes a long way towards reducing stalling at stops.
