Re: A oil pan question

Thanks guys. Jim, what I neglected to say was that it has modified pistons (283's) and rods. It's the allen bolts on the rods that don't clear as you pointed out. I wonder if you can heat and...

A oil pan question

Hey Guys,

Haven't pestered the old pros for awhile but got a question. A friend of mine purchased a "good" B engine for his 31 with one catch. No oil pan. He has plenty of A oil pans but oh...

Re: New vibration

Valves are all new and proper clearance. Plugs are all ash colored so was running good. I wonder if the dynamics of the engine would have changed enough to make an out of balance clutch/flywheel...

Re: New vibration

I guess the next question would by how close should they be to each other to make they play well together. I figured I'd do what Patrick suggested. With only 50 miles on them, the pistons can still...

Re: New vibration

Could I weigh the whole assembly e.g. piston and rod? I've got the shims where I want them and would like to keep them together if I could. I've never replaced these many new parts at once so that's...

Re: New vibration

I was sort of afraid that would be the answer. I'm suprised that their would be enough weight variance to set up a vibration with all new parts. Oh well, a winter project.

Re: Sealed beams for model a.

Tom,
I'm not sure who makes them but I have the exposed sealed beam conversion on my 29. I think I put out of "wanted" on the Swap Meet. Lot's of folks have changed back like Ryan so they're out...

New vibration

Hey Guys,
I've checked the old threads and some close but no cigar. I've got an engine vibration since I rebuilt it with all new rods, pistons and rings. All from different dealers but all where...

Re: Sport coupe belt moulding?

Hey thanks guys. I believe mine was assembled in Vancouver BC and the belt looks like it was originally screwed on (probably with Robertson screws). I think the previous owner(s) tried the copper...

Re: Sport coupe belt moulding?

That's exacially the piece I'm looking for on my Special Coupe. The one I have was nailed on! I'd try to clean mine up and try to reuse it but I haven't seen a good pic of what a good one should look...

Re: Burnt engne paint. Potential problem??

It sure looks like an engine fire starting at the carb. The manifold area protected the paint directly above the carb from blistering but it creeped around both ends. Looks like some gas pooled on...

Re: How loud is too loud for gears?

Lots of folks use what's called 600W (not weight) gear oil. You can get it through most the suppliers. Some folks use a mix of gear oil and STP. I'm presently using 85-140 and frankly can't tell...

Re: How tight is tight?

Like I mentioned, I've never had any experience with "new" rods/babbitt so I didn't know. The machinest that fitted the rods to the pistons did check for rod alignment but not being one (a machinest...

Re: How tight is tight?

Thought someone would be interested how I finally checked my rod clearances. Didn't want to take too much apart so I adjusted them upside down. Worked great as I had plenty of access and could...

Re: How tight is tight?

Well now....I pulled the pistons and rechecked the clearances on the rods again. I 1st called the folks that did the rods. They align bore the rods (.40over) with a shim pack in but mentioned side...

Re: How tight is tight?

Next chapter: Got back together after doing the side clearance on the rods to .008, hooked up the starter and still solid as a rock. I've got it back apart again and I'm beginning to think I'm off...

Re: How tight is tight?

Tom,
At this point this is an engine waiting for a car so it's a "spare" therefore the new pistons, rings, rods etc. I'm just trying to get it set up so I know it will be ready. Not trying to run...

Re: How tight is tight?

Well I got my .008 side clearance! I disconnected the rods and pulled them down past the crank journal. I got some 400 wet/dry paper and a sanding block and worked on the rods tightened with the...

Re: How tight is tight?

Thanks guys. Absolutely NO side clearance at the journals which I will start work on to get the recommended .008-.012. I'll probably use a sanding block rather than a file to sneak up on the...

Re: How tight is tight?

Thanks for the plastiguage tip. My read out on the crank looked exacially like the one in your pic. Any ideas about side clearance on the journals on the B since I think is where I'm ceased up? I...

Re: How tight is tight?

Thanks Guys,
That lack of clearance had been bothering me and the more I thought about it, the more I got to thinking I had metal against metal on those journals. I've used the tin foil method...

How tight is tight?

Hey Guys,
Just finished putting my B engine back together with the following new parts installed and adjusted to spec. New pistons, rings, rods and pins and ground crank. Valve springs also new....

Did they have more than one box? I'm thinking I've seen a number of different styles through the four years.

Re: Quick question

I adjusted the forks and found about 1/16-1/32" end play probably at the bearing (which is funny since it doesn't leak a drop) when I pressed the clutch. That may be where my adjustment went. ...
