Re: Installing New Brake Rods on 31 Cabriolet as part of total restoration

Les Andrews book gives a length to set the brake rods to. Then it says to pull the rods/levers to take all the slack out of the system, which changes the length. Then if you watch Paul Shinn's...

Re: New timing gear

Is there anything more detrimental besides the noise to running the small gear? Shock loading the cam? Aluminum wear in the oil?

Re: New timing gear

The car ran fine, no problems shifting, no noise from the transmission. I was changing the gear as a preventative maintenance issue. The old fiber gear looked good, and there was chisel marks on...

New timing gear

Put a new aluminum timing gear, with a a new crank gear. Backlash is excessive at .008-.010 and there is noise. Is there any cause for this besides bad gears(which I kinda doubt)? I know nothing...

Re: Rear main options

The front half of the crack will move in and out. I am/was planning on doing a 4,000 miles trip this summer, which is why I'm a bit hesitant about patches/running it.

I'm not sure about the...

Re: Rear main options

Park it until the bank account grows or I find a better engine? This isn't my commute to work car, it can sit.

Re: Rear main options

I pretty much just buttoned it up again, affixing the pipe better. I didn't check the bearings, because well...it's not long for this world anyway.

The engine runs well, has good power, but...

Rear main options

I think I already know the answer to this. Car runs fine, not noises, only leaks oil when you shut it off. Pulled the pan, to check the rear drain tube and bearing. Drain tube is not great, where...

Re: Fuse size

You also have to consider branch circuits with the wire size. The entire electrical system will get a larger fuse, than say a fuse that's just running your signal lights, with a smaller gauge wire....

Re: Tight crank gear

The new gear looks like it's a cast blank, with a stress riser in the keyway with a sharp corner, doing an almost .003 press fit seems wrong. I realize that heating the gear will make it easier to...

Tight crank gear

In replacing the timing gear with aluminum, I am installing a new crank gear. The new gear is tight. I know they are supposed to be tight because of harmonic reasons.

I was going to deep fry...

Re: Pressure plate adjutant

So if you adjust on the bench, with the fingers just touching/below the cover, when you bolt it to the flywheel you get the required 5/8"?

Rainmaker Rob's cooler

I saw a picture of Rainmaker Ron's front cooler holder and I like it. Removeable, simple, only thing is from the picture I can't tell where the back legs go? Do they sit on the axle? Hang in the...

Re: Pressure plate adjutant

If you adjust it on the bench, and then readjust again once it's bolted to the flywheel, what does the bench adjustment accomplish?

Re: Peep mirrors

Well...I reversed the clamp and that helps get the mirror where I want, but it does make it only set on a small area of the arm on the door. So I decided to make my own arms. I have access to a CNC...

Re: Timing gears

I understand and read some of the price/quality issues, but the difference in the macerated vs laminated gear is $20. It's not exactly break the bank.

Better question, if you were replacing...

Re: Peep mirrors

Rotated every which way, every degree, and it is mounted on the front edge of the door, I cannot see the edge of the car. I'm going to fab my own mounts.

Pressure plates

Snyders will sell a rebuilt pressure plate or a brand new pressure plate. The brand new one is $100 cheaper. Are there problems with it? Why rebuild your old one?

Timing gears

Snyders sells a macerated, a laminated, and a aluminum timing gear. The original is macerated and prone to disintegrating, laminated is better? Aluminum is bullet proof? Why sell a macerated gear?
