Re: New versus old valve springs
It does sound as if you have the late "rotator" type springs but the early retainers. The early springs are longer and will fix your mismatch. That's the way I'd go.

Re: 80 years ago today
We owe those allies a lot. Everything, in fact. We should all do our best to make sure our young people don't forget-starting with our own families.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Nice pics. Standing on the front is classic! One thing different when I put the later engine in the '41...the carb mount pad on the manifold is at a different angle than the early engine's and the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Well, you got me. The belt is routed down around that idler (cut down from an idler on a John Deere 4 cyl) which mounts to a threaded hole in the slingshot bracket. The alternator is cheated forward...

Re: 1940 master cylinder repair kit
As Kurt said above, the washer goes in the cylinder first, and sits at the very bottom of the bore...clear at the end. Then the check valve and spring, cup and piston. The washer's job is sealing the...

Re: Rear end squealing/whining
If it never makes the noise unless the truck is moving it's not the clutch throwout bearing.
If you can't run the truck on stands with wheels spinning I don't know how you'll isolate the noise...

Re: 1940 V8 Cam / valve timing
You actually did a very good job. The lash mistake is an honest one, and is not uncommon especially if someone doesn't do this for a living. Making your own timing tape and using a damper you have on...

Re: chevy dizzy for flatheads
If you use a carburetor other than the stock unit, the vacuum source for the Ford distributor will not be correct and the timing curve will be wrong. Also, the Ford distributor used ONLY vacuum to...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
A post above referenced the larger engine pulling more vacuum, causing the power valve to open earlier.
This is backward. The power valve is held closed by vacuum and when vac drops the...

What Denny says...vaseline is great for the pump priming.
One of my old instructors called vaseline "bedroom salve". You put it on the door knob to keep the kids out.

Re: Tolerance-Ford aluminum heads
At first it would seem that way. However, any excess out-of-flat in either direction will require some extra amount of bolt torque to overcome the warp and bring the head back to flat. From that...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Sure, loosen them all, take what you need and snug down the remaining bolts enough to keep moderate pressure on the gaskets. Spread the remaining bolts out best you can. That'll work.

Re: 8Ba with Big Cam idle/hg
Looks good from here. In fact the whole thing looks great! The 390 carb won't make it run lean if it's too small (quite the opposite in fact) but might limit power at the top end if the engine can...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I believe the end play on the shaft/gear assembly in the pump body is controlled by the drive gear clearance to the pump housing. That play should not allow the pumping gear to bear against the end...
