F100 - 1953 to 1956? Steering Box/Column Disassembly

6 Attachment(s)
I picked this up yesterday thinking I might use it for my speedster build. I want to separate the box from the column but haven’t been able to find anything. Lots of info/vids on how to rebuild/ remove from vehicle, but nothing I could find on how to remove the column. It is seized and the casting on the box shows “Ingersoll Machine TAAA”. Any help would be much appreciated.

Pop the cap off the top of the steering wheel, loosen the nut holding the wheel on, attach a puller to the wheel, be careful not to mess up the threads on the shaft, loosen the clamp attaching the column to the box and pull the column off.

Thanks! Does the cap just pop off? Looks like a three pronged spring with tabs maybe holding it in. Will have a closer look later today.

Springs don’t hold it on, the round cap will pop off with a little persuasion from a flat blade screwdriver then you will be looking at the nut holding the wheel on.

The spring holds the horn button on

Got it. Removed the cap and nut, but don’t have any 5/16” fine? pitch threaded rod/bolt to pull off the steering wheel. Will need to get something in town later.

Got the 5/16” fine pitch bolts yesterday. First tried my gear/pulley puller, but the centre of the 5/16” bolts were too close to the main thread and the slots in the “H” beam were not deep enough to allow the width of the 5/16” bolts centre distance to be used. Luckily, I had an unused drum brake puller kit that worked. The steering wheel came off super easy, now got to get this snap looking ring off. Not sure if my pliers are going to work on this weird looking ring.

Well, I guess the “snap ring” wasn’t a snap ring after all. Twisted it out with a flat screwdriver. Managed to loosen things up with a bit of PB Blaster. It wasn’t seized too bad after all. Lol!
Managed to hammer out the sector shaft with a soft blow hammer until it was about an 1/8” from the seal. Then used my hyd press to push it out the rest of the way. While hammering away with the hammer, the tapered roller bearing(s) fell out, and then I was able to pull out the steering input shaft. The pin for the gear on the sector shaft was brazed at both ends. Not sure if this is factory or not. The polished surfaces under the bronze? sleeve bearings are a bit scuffed, but I’m guessing should be ok?
