getting into the Rumble Seat

I am still new to my Model A and rumble seat, is there a way to get into the rumble seat WITHOUT stepping into the seat? People really like to sit back there understandably, but I cringe every time someone steps from the fender into the seat to get in, it puts a lot of stress on the leather of the seat, any hacks or great ideas for saving the back seat material?

I also have a rumble seat that has been used for almost 40 years. The absolute safest way to enter and exit the rumble seat is to stand on the seat . If the seat material is in good shape , you should have no issues. I don’t allow high healed shoes for obvious reasons. Trying to get your foot to reach the floor is asking for trouble, groin pulls ,etc. and dragging your other foot from the fender into the rumble seat is sure to cause damage to your paint job. Use a towel or similar to help keep the upholstery clean if nothing else. This is not a seat for less than agile people, getting in is relatively easy ,getting out is another challenge with its own set of issues. Always use a spotter to guide shoes to the step plates , half on the step plate means their other half is on your fender.
Good luck , Don

There is no safe way (to my knowledge) of getting in or out of a rumble seat unless you stand on the seat. I ask (demand) riders remove shoes first.

This link- https://youtu.be/RBSCd2McCp8?feature=shared&t=39 will take you about 39 seconds into a video where you can see a nice lady I had just met getting into a rumble seat and taking a ride. She was absolutely THRILLED to finally ride in a rumble seat!

I didn’t know my Model A was a chick magnet. Of course, in my case any lady under 80 is a chick!

Does your rumble seat have the handles on the "dutch panel" area?

Every year before COVID we used to go the one of the local living centesr for the elderly
to give rides in our Model A's.
One year there was a 101yr. old Nun that insisted on getting a ride in the rumble seat.
We she got in ok with some assistance, but getting out was a group effort.
Good thing she was probably 80lbs. soaking wet. She absolutely loved it, but figured
she wouldn't try it again next year.

Maybe buy a spare lower cushion in naugahyde for use and save your leather cushion for show................

What Don S said X2.. My instructions to a new "seater" is left foot on the bumper step plate.... Right foot on the fender step plate... left foot on the seat... slide in. Getting out usually begins with standing on the seat , both feet.
No problem , mine is no "trailer queen"

When I had a rumble seat I also had a special blanket or towel I would spread if I anticipated riders. I eventually solved the problem by returning the space to a trunk, which was original to my car and is much more practical. No one has ever asked to ride in the trunk.

One time at a nursing home car showing this very elderly lady came to the Roadster rumble seat area and said "You won't believe what you can do in one of those rumble seats!!".

The rumble seat was likely better for kids to set in. I know I don't fit well into mine. A lot of folks put the top props for roadsters on the side rails so that folks will have a handle but they weren't really made for that purpose. Some folks jokingly referred to the rumble as a mother in law seat but most mothers in law would have a hard time getting in and out of there.

My first ride in a rumble seat was as a young cub scout in a parade throwing out candy. There were two of us seated in there. One of the elders of my church had an old Chrysler series 70 Coupe. It was a lot of fun but I just barely fit and I wasn't finished growing yet. By the time I was 13 it would have been a little too tight.

Decades ago, my sister-in-law with her husband and five kids visited us. The wives took the two older ones shopping and left the men to babysit the rest. We loaded them in the rumble seat (they were small enough for all three to fit) and went to the Dairy Queen. On the way back, we stopped at a red light beside a new Corvette convertible. The driver complemented the car and talked to the kids in the back. Course they thought the trip was great fun and told their siblings about it. Naturally, we then had to make a second trip with the older ones. :D

It's the ideal mother-in-law seat....... unless you have a roll down back window.

You can ride in the trunk but you’ll have to get out on your own.
