Spit and Sputter... Started up the A and pulled it out of the garage, idling for five minutes and all was fine. Started down the street and all of a sudden started bucking and backfiring and trying to stall out pulled the advance up and down, with no change. Turned the car around and barely made it back to the house.
My question is: Where and what should I start to look for. :eek: |
Re: Spit and Sputter... ck, clean and regap your points
make sure you have a good fuel flow by removing the line off the carb and filling a container make sure you have a good strong spark that should be a start |
Re: Spit and Sputter... Mine did exactly the same thing. Running great, then spitting, sputtering, backfiring, barely made it home. Cause was a distributor shaft extremely loose, causing point gap to change as engine was running. Rebuilt distributor solved the problem.

Re: Spit and Sputter... All the above and, is gas cap venting . Check condenser . Check dist cap /rotor . Check timing
|
Re: Spit and Sputter... Could also try opening the GVA a little more, could be fuel starvation at higher RPM's.

Re: Spit and Sputter... Exactly what my 29 RPU does when the crummy condenser in my New Rex distributor fails, which is quite frequent.

Re: Spit and Sputter... Brambleworth;
I had the same problem as you . Put in a NAPA condenser . Problem solved . Original condenser in my New Rex dist. lasted 30 minutes. |
Re: Spit and Sputter... What ignition switch do you have?
I had a bad missing and backfiring problem a few years ago until I notice the engine stopped as soon as I started to turn the key. The switch contacts were barely making contact. I took the switch apart and made them better and haven't had any problem since. |
Re: Spit and Sputter... Tom the switch is the original pop out. I played with the gav and didn't make a difference. I just drove it to Columbus NJ the Wed. before with no problems. Also played with the Advance...no difference either. I pulled the distributer apart thinking the short wire in the bottom plate was doing it but it looks ok.
