New cast iron rear drums I ordered new rear cast iron drums and the drum bolts with the longer shoulder for swaging. The shoulder (swaging part) of the bolts is just short of going thru the hub and drum. Turns out the drums were not champfered to give the bolt shoulder room to expand when swaged. I had to take a large drill and champfer all the bolt holes in the drums. I contacted the vendor about this and they denied any problem with their rear drums.
The front drums were okay. If ordering rear cast iron drums you may have to modify them slightly on your drill press. |
Re: New cast iron rear drums If you want to avoid the issues as stated above, contact Randy Gross at 714-292-8660. I have purchased brake drums and lugs from him several times. Randy sells Model A brake drums and shoes, rebuilds steering boxes, and will sell you a rebuilt backing plate. He is very knowledgeable, has been in the Model A brake drum business for years, and is truly a nice guy to deal with.

Re: New cast iron rear drums I have ordered a couple hundred drums over the last twenty years. Mostly from Brattons, a few were from Snyders. Never a problem. Would you consider telling us where the drums came from.

Re: New cast iron rear drums I bought some rear Drums from Randy and the price was somewhat less than the other vendors and excellent advice to boot, I learned a better way of swapping them to the hubs as well . Randy is my first call on steering and brake parts they also done a great job on the steering arm repairs .
