1929 Ford Station Wagon in need of seats
 

Hi guys! I am about to purchase a 1929 Woody, a 4 door station wagon, which is basically a very good older restoration, but for some reason I don't understand (and neither does the son of the owner) there is no rear seats for it, only the front one. I am not sure but I don't believe there is any rails or anything for the rear seats either.

Questions:

Are those seats a wooden structure covered with plastic as in the front seat?

Is anybody reproducing them or are there any drawings one could use to replicate them?

The two center seats and back bench seat on the Station Wagons were all removable. There should be sets of fittings, sockets really, on the floor that the hardware bits on the seats fit into. I had to make the rear bench seat on mine 10 yrs or so ago. At that point LeBaron Bonney was making the cover kits for all the seats, but you had to source the wooden frames and mounting hardware from where you could find them. Not sure what the story is today. There is a special interest group for the wagons that is a wealth of information and have a nice newsletter.

The center and back seat didn't use rails, there should be a number of small plates set into the floor with more or less square holes in them. The seats had stand offs, the front ones were a kinda hook and the back ones were kinda arrow shaped. The front pair went in to the first row of plates and allowed the seat to be rotated back, the rear arrow shaped ones went into the 2ed row of holes. Those had a spring loaded catch that held the seat post in place. The seats have some brackets inside under the upholstery that supported the back.

Up to about 4 or 5 years ago you could buy the parts to install the two rows of seats but are no longer being made. I think there was someone that was going to take over making the parts but don't think it went anywhere.

If the plates with holes are not there I think you will have to get creative. Can you post a photo or two of the floor?

I did find Snyder's has the spring structure for the seats.

I should get the station wagon next week and post pictures.

From looking at the photo of the station wagon it looks like the side curtain storage compartment is not present. They are also extremely hard to get.
Not having critical original parts affects value.

If anyone can supply original (or repo) seat legs, I can likely get them recast in bronze.
Casting bronze is tough enough to be totally functional,.

if everything is missing- good chance this is a wagon that was not built at the factory.
such as a Pleasantville body.

When I saw it, I honestly did not check what it had behind under carpet. I will check as soon as I get it.

If the engine number for the car being purchased should happen to be A 240116, I know who its first owner was. It was he who dispensed with the rear seats. His granddaugher asked me recently to find out where the car was and who owned it.

Many parts are still available from Ruth at S&S Industries, 716-753-2238. Within the past year I have purchased all the metal parts needed to build, and attach to the floor, the jump seats and rear seat. She had everything except the jump seat backs. I built the wooden seat frames.

As mentioned above Jeff Yeagle has the legs as well.

The Woody Wagons Chapter of MACFA has back issues of new letters which contain the dimensions of the wooden structures. Contact Tim Johnstone.

Seems to me Ruth was connected to Pleasantville, she handled the metal part side of the business and her husband was the wood side. In any case, good to hear (even if not same person) those parts are back in production. When we were working on the 30 wagon in the shop a few years back, we were able to get a few pieces that were still in stock. The legs being sold by Jeff look like some of the legs we got at the time. In any case, no matter who made them, they may require fitting to work together (more then drilling holes to mount to seats). Jeff might be connected with East Coast Woodies. (?)

Correct, Pleasantville went out of business in Dec 2016. S&S has continued to supply metal parts. I have found S&S is sometimes out of stock on an item, but at other times will have them. Call and talk with Ruth, nice person to do business with.

Also correct regarding Jeff and East Coast Woodies. He is also here sometimes, "Sawzall" if I remember correctly. Also a good resource for a few of the harder parts. He has reproduced the corner braces and center tail gate hinge. There is an article in Woodie Times a few months back on how he made the center tail gate hinge, authored by Jeff.

Upholstery, don't know yet. I have about 90% of a kit from LaBaron Bonney, have a call into Mike at Classtique Upholstery, but don't see a kit for Station Wagons listed on his site. Will update when I know something.
