Leg room question

How much more leg room is there in a model a coupe than there is in a pickup?? I believe that the coupes have a seat fore and aft adjuster whereas the pickup seats have only one position.
Thanks for any input.

Re: Leg room question

I just compared my '29 closed cab to my '29 standard coupe. The top front edge of the seat bottoms were the same at about 9" back from the A pillar. The top front edges of the seat backs were about 1-1/2" different in distance back from the dash rail, 29-1/2" versus 31" for the coupe. Both do not have adjustable seats. That small distance difference for the seat back is significant for improving comfort on a multi hour drive.

To say nothing of the wear marks the steering wheel leaves on my shirt. :D

Re: Leg room question

In my '30 coupe I cut about an inch and a half off the package tray. That let the seat slide back, and give more room for my 6'4" body. A small move, but it made a noticeable difference.

I have a 29 std coupe and I was able to adjust the back of the seat back, a couple of inches. The Ford service bulletins page 257 tells you how to do this. If you would like a copy of this page, PM me and I will try to send you a copy.

Re: Leg room question

On my '29 Coupe, I determined the former owner had done a poor job on the back seat cushion and had overstuffed it. I took it apart and saw none of the springs had been tied down. I uniformly tied all the springs about 2" and put in new batting on the seat cushion. All totalled I picked up about 2-1/2" of leg room... much better. As a guide, I looked at the interior pictures of all the coupes I could find on ebay and noticed that the bottom of the back seat cushion aligned with the welting on the door. I think it shows on my album pictures on my personal page. Well worth the effort and time involved.

Re: Leg room question

I am 6' 4" and I just didn't fit in my Fordor sedan. It wasn't safe either as my leg would get stuck under the steering wheel and I couldn't get to the brake. I made new seat to door post brackets and moved the whole seat back about 2.5 - 3 inches and bent the shifter to the right. It is very comfortable and easy to drive now. A pickup or coupe is nearly impossible to drive for me. There is so much leg room in the back seat of the Fordor that it wasn't a problem for the passengers when I moved the seat back.

Murphy,
On my '30 coupe, I cut 4" from the package tray, drilled out seat riser rivets and moved the WHOLE seat assembly back a full 4," WONDERFUL! and it looked like a factory job.
Can't do it on my '29 coupe without butchering it!
Took out stock cushions, cut 3/4" plywood panels for back & bottom, covered them with carpet, put piano hinge on front of bottom panel for tool acccess under seat. Mounting 2 curved back bar stool seats, with swivels I found at Bass- Pro Shop!
Go'nna look RACY! No alterations to the car at all,and it can be changed back to stock in 10 minutes. Keep watching, as I will be posting pictures.--Bill W.

Wonder if this would work on a '31 CCPU?

If I remember correctly, I think there is quite a difference between 28/29 and 30/31.. I think there is more room in the 30/31, but, then again, maybe not..

What I really remember is that there was a whole lot more room in my Model A's when I was a teen ager than there is now.

Re: Leg room question

My friend has a 31 widebed and the seat is very tight as well as uncomfortable because the seat back is so straight. I'll have to check another 31 to compare, but this one just doesn't seem right.

Carl,
Yes, definately. The curved back of the seat is only about 1 inch thick, which gives you a lot of leg room and it has a nice angle for comfort. The foam filled bottom is about 3 inches thick, so you gain some headroom also. Bill W.

Yes, the 30/31 coupes have quite a bit more legroom than the 28/29. Bill W.

Re: Leg room question

For you 30-31 Pickup guys-

Snyder's makes a set of thinner seat springs that do a world of good increasing leg room. I ordered a set for my early '31 sometime back and while I haven't upholstered them yet, there is a noticeable difference in leg room when compared to the standard/original size springs that were in the truck when I got it. The seat cushion is a bit lower as well. Now my line of sight isn't even with the top of the windshield which is a good thing.

Don't know how I missed this thread before but Bill, that's an idea I'm going to put to use in my 31CCPU. Thanks
